ESPN POLL NBA 3rd Most Popular in Oregon
On ESPN.com right now they have a poll up. What is your favorite professional sport? I can understand NFL being the most popular but why is baseball more popular in Oregon than basketball?
Oregon-National Average:
Nascar 2%-3%
NBA 16%-10%
NFL 54%-53%
NHL 4%-7%
MLB 24%-27%

Re: ESPN POLL NBA 3rd Most Popular in Oregon
I wouldn't read much into it. Oregon pretty much reflects the rest of the country. Even in Texas, where they have two of the best teams in the NBA and another team with one of the biggest stars (T-Mac), basketball pales in popularity to football and basketball.
The current state of the team here doesn't help matters, of course. But even if the Blazers were flying high, I still think you'd be surprised at how many people put basketball behind baseball and football.

Re: ESPN POLL NBA 3rd Most Popular in Oregon
There are just A LOT of people out there who really dont like NBA basketball. Ive always enjoyed it but I could see where they were coming from several years ago, when there werent any stars other than the damn Lake-Show and the NBA was just so watered down. Now I think its as good as ever.
Growing up in Dallas (actually in Dallas, not in a suburb 1hr away) I was certainly able to decipher that there were plenty who literally "hated" the NBA, not only b/c the Mavs were so pitiful for so long, but it just didnt appeal to them (a bunch of crybabies hogging the ball, who cant shoot anything but 3's or dunk). I then went to school in Norman, OK and most people from OK I met were from OKC or Tulsa (both about 1 million) and really disliked the NBA as well. Usually for the same reasons and also b/c, well, they didnt have a team they grew up with or one to root for.
But now the entire state is going bonkers over the Hornets and the NBA is really picking up. It can go without saying that the NFL reigns supreme just about everywhere and baseball, its kinda funny. I love it, but youd be surprised how many are still into America's pasttime...it just goes with summer. It will always be prevalent. The NBA is always so up and down with pseudo-dynasties, lack of stars every few years, etc. To think of it...its kinda like Sat. Night Live, just way too up and down to really captivate full attention year after year.

I demand a recount.
The real question is why is football more popular now in Oregon than BASEBALL?
Must be all those Calipornians who moved up here.

Why is baseball popular at all? I'm into the college game with metal bats, but the MLB is a joke without salary caps.

They are not talking about it..it would be the result if they cannot reach a new collective bargaining agreement with the players union. This year would be capped low at around 95million forcing many teams to cut players to get below the cap. Next year would be uncapped like MLB is. It certainly wouldn't be a permanent thing like it is in MLB.

Why does not having salary caps matter?....Let those teams load up on All-Star caliber player, the Yankees have continually had a ridiculous payroll and they haven't won a world series since 2000...While teams like the Marlins, Angels and White Sox have been winning it...
