Re: Semi-OT: The Clipper Plan
Let us not forget that the Clippers have made the playoffs twice in two different rebuilt forms in living memory. The first time was under Larry Brown, when their stars were Danny Manning, Ron Harper and Loy Vaught. Then the first implosion started when Manning wanted out and was replaced by an almost-washed-up 'Nique. The slate was quickly wiped, and ancient (but surprisingly effective) Bill Fitch was brought in to coach a team whose best player was Pooh Richardson, and which started the season 0-16. Then we had the McDyess draft (boos - the fans wanted Rasheed, even BIGGER boos when he was quickly traded to Denver) and a promising new squad, with a very effective pre-Bison Dele Brian Williams at C and a star rookie called Brent Barry. Fitch eventually coached this squad into the playoffs... before another implosion and another rebuilding project. Mark Heisler of the LA Times has had a long-running "Open Letter to Donald Sterling" feature that can recount the attrocities. HOWEVER, Sterling has FOR THE FIRST TIME actually re-signed some free agents, so he might be changing his ways. But we'll see when Dunleavy comes up for an extension. (I would say actually that it's a toss-up between hiring Dunleavy and signing Cassell for what was the biggest catalyst for the current success.)

wouldn't they have had to have first HAD (say that 3 times fast) the "player development plan" in the first place for this argument to be accurate?
|
Player development as in, bringing in a ton of young guys and hoping a few pan out. Also known in some circles as gambling, and the house always wins.

the clippers never have really done that. They bring in youngins, and once they get expensive, traded them for cheaper talent (sometimes better talent) and then traded them for cheaper (sometimes better) talent once they got too expensive..and so on and so on and so on.

Re: Semi-OT: The Clipper Plan
Either way, you're playing the odds by bringing in lots of young guys and never moving forward. The Clippers got good by finally realizing you need to bring in veterans who are ready to contribute now. Then you fill the team out with youth.

I think they got good because they finally got an owner who was comitted to spending money.
Take away Elton Brand from that team, and they're really nothing special.

Re: Semi-OT: The Clipper Plan
Saying the Clippers dont pay talent is just wrong. They havent relly had that much talent just young players who show flashes then other teams over-pay them. Look at the guys they havent payed, what have they become. Sterling has actually been smart with his money. Q-Rich was way too espensive look at him thi year. Olowankandi-do I need to say anything. Odom-was not gonna get the huge contract the same year as Brand. Andre Miller-played very bad as a Clipper. The only one was Danny Manning-and after that he had horrible knee problems. The clippers might have know something about that.

his history goes further back than that. There's a reason the Clippers have stunk for 90% of the time they've been in LA..they have an owner who is cheap, and a GM who couldn't draft to save his life.

Re: Semi-OT: The Clipper Plan
Now the GM who couldnt draft is very very true. But it's not like the Clippers have had great players who they havent payed. So even if they did pay those guys they probably still would have been crappy.

They were nothing special with Brand. They added veterans around him and become an upper echelon team literally overnight, as hard as it is for me to say that.

They also drafted Kaman, who has been a good part of their success...
