Drexler says he understands the value of the franchise is in the neighborhood of $165 million

dang, it's not worth bupkiss now.
I wouldn't be opposed to a new owner, but it depends on what that new owner did with the team (and who's on the team) and how much he was worth.
Bottom line, if the team stays in Portland then I don't care who plays on the team.

Re: Drexler wants a piece of the blazer pie
This sounds weird: the guy's calling round ex-Blazers to see if they're interested, and the only three mentioned are Clyde (fair enough), Terry (of course) and... Detlef Schrempf?
Besides, Clyde said he'd want to be part of the running of the team. I'm sorry, I am VERY sceptical that he knows squat about running a team. (Particularly now I know he's a Republican...)
I'm more interested in the notion that Whitsitt's getting a group together. Not least because it might get rid of the morons who think "Whitless" is high satire. But mostly because the guy knows how to put together a winning team. (Now, once the team is winning, perhaps we need someone to come in and put the last finishing touches on it, or just tell him: "Let it go: Kemp is a fat loser now.")
(Incidentally: anyone notice in that Paul Allen article that he was quick to blame the "previous management" for "trading Jermaine O'Neal for Shawn Kemp"? Never mind that they weren't actually traded for each other.)

Re: Drexler wants a piece of the blazer pie
I wonder if it is Whitsitt who is calling around. Yes, I know they said it was a Portland man calling around, but I can't imagine many people who would include Detlef in the discussions unless they personally knew Detlef (as he isn't really a face of Blazers' basketball).
Of course, the discussions sound so preliminary, that I'm not banking on there being a mention ever again.

Re: Drexler wants a piece of the blazer pie
I saw Buck Williams on TV a few days ago during an ACC tourney game.
My money on the mystery man would be Tom Peterson.

But doesn't Clyde hate Whitsitt?
Maybe not quite as much as he hates Jake O'Donnell, but I'm pretty sure there was a lot of bad blood there in the last months before the team's long decline began with the brilliant Drexler for Otis Thorpe deal.

Stepping Razor... you are right... no way Clyde would be involved with Witsitt. He hates him with a passion.

Whitsitt having anything to do with a new ownership group would basically seal the fate of this team in this city.
and if he's so great at building teams, why is he currenty not the GM of any team?

I'm not sure where the sarcasm begins here. I'm guessing you're serious about the "long decline" and not serious about the "brilliant". (If I'm wrong, then disregard what follows.)
What people seem to forget is that it was widely perceived that Clyde was over-the-hill (remember "Clyde the slide"?) and overpaid. He wasn't exactly a hot property. Moreover, Whitsitt did him a huge favour by sending him to Houston, his most preferred destination. So I think Clyde doth protest too much about Trader Bob. And no, we didn't get much for Clyde (although, of course, Otis was coming off an All-Star year, I believe), but it was the first step in a fairly fast reconstruction that was achieved without missing the playoffs. A lesson in there for other GMs who shall remain nameless.

Isn't he recovering from serious heart trouble? Plus he's been pretty much slandered by the Oregon press, which can't help.

I don't think that would even save him. Portland fans aren't just gullable fools who only want to see winners.
So the guy who a lot of fans associate with the "jail blazer" image returns?
yeah, that'll go over smooth.

he had some kind of tumor on his bladder I thought. Nothing life threatening.
How exactly was he slandered by the press? That would imply they made up stuff about him, which you have less proof that they did, than I do that they didn't (just ask former employees and current ones..TB didn't exactly care about people or character)

My money is on Terry Emmert of moving the "Spruce Goose" fame. He is very chummy with Drexler and many other former Blazers including Lucas. He has scads of money and is a great local businessman.
