trade the pick idea

let me first say that Im not advocating this, nor do I think it's possible.

here are some of the criteria for it.

1. Portland gets the #1 pick
2. Chicago (via NY) gets the 3rd pick (it is possible, and was the 7th option on Realgm's lotto sim)
3. Chicago really really wants whoever would be the #1 pick (not saying who tho)
4. Chicago also has 12th pick

So, Portland gets the #1 and trades it to Chicago for the #3 pick and the #12 pick + future 2nd for #1 Detroits pick and Darius.

(we could also change it so Chicago gets the 2nd pick instead, so it's be 1 + Darius for 2 + 12).

This way, Portland could get who they want (Morrison, Gay, Aldridge, whatever) plus a decent pick with the 2nd pick.

I realize that a lot of people think we HAVE to take the #1 pick in this scenario (and I get that) but I do think that if they can get who they want at #2 or #3 AND get the 12th pick which could also net them a decent player (O'bryant, Sheldon Williams and Noah are currently in that range..of course a LOT can change between now and then).

Of course, one could also think that the team could trade Joel instead of Miles, and then draft a big with the 2nd pick.

I don't know what they have to say, it makes no difference anyway, whatever it is, I'm against it!
No matter what it is or who commenced it, I'm against it!

Your proposition may be good, but let's have one thing understood, whatever it is, I'm against it! And even when you've changed it or condensed it, I'm against it!

Re: trade the pick idea

I am not totally opposed to moving down a couple spots, but I think there is probably a decent vet that we could get for it. We have enough young guys and picking up another draft pick isn't going to help us unless we were going to trade it in another deal.

Maybe I would think about it if they wanted to part with Gordon or Hinrich.

Re: trade the pick idea

If we got #1, I wouldn't mind dropping back to #3, since I don't think there's a slam dunk top pick, or top two picks. Not that I think #12 is going to yield much of value, but better to have it than not.

Incidentally, I don't Noah, if he comes out, has any chance of dropping to #12 in such a weak draft.

valid points. I'm not so sure that chicago wants to get the 1st pick so bad, that they'd be willing to give up Gordon or Hinrich (which would just make our backcourt just increase in #, but not in height).

I looked on chicagos roster, and honestly there aren't too many people that they'd probably be willing to trade in this scenario (AND I'm not sure they'd be willing to trade BOTH picks). They are very thin going into next year.

I'd much rather trade for a vet (something) but I'm not too interested in what is out there and most likely available. Who I would like, is probably available for far more than it's worth to Portland. Who Portland would like (whoever that is) is probably unavaiable for what Portland has or whats worth to Portland.

It's an odd cycle. We probably need vet help, but the vet help we can get isn't much vet help. The team needs talent (and talent that will play today) but getting that just makes the team younger.

Re: trade the pick idea

As much as I'd like to trade down in the draft, I'm not so sure Chicago is so inclined to get Darius Miles when they have Luol Deng, who is already better than Miles, IMO.

Maybe send Miles to New Orleans for Desmond Mason, whose contract will expire after next year, and Blazers give an extra year to develop Martell? At the moment, New Orleans has #15 and #16.

So Darius + #1 either one of the other picks for Desmond Mason's contract, #15, #16 and a future pick? Just a thought.....

I'd say no to that one. At least, not including our 1st pick.

Masons contract + the 16th for Miles + detroits pick is much better than us giving away the 1st pick, even in a "weak" draft.

Because Portland is already full of projects. Do we really need more raw projects to develop? Telfair, Webster, Outlaw, Kryhapa. And to some extent Pryzbilla, Zach, and even Miles. Yeah I know what I called for brings in 2 young guys, but at 15 and 16, they wouldn't necessarily be "raw" like Thomas is right now. Hell at 15/16, Redick and Sheldon Williams as well as other established college seniors most likely will drop to with every team's enamoration with potential.

That's a steal on our part...Mason is a decent player who brings a consistent game every night although is probably not as generally talented ar Miles. Plus his contract is expiring as mentioned.
