they can't, as of now, overpay him. they don't have the cap room.

IMHO, giving Joel, an oft injured center with zero offensive skills and worse at the free throw line, the full MLE is overpaying for him.

Let Przybilla walk, then trade Darius and a pick for any expiring contract you can find. If that doesn't work, you have Allen buy him out on his way out of town, and ask for a exemption from the league.

Buy him out and have his contract sit on our books for the rest of the contract doing nothing? An exemption from the league? Why would they give an exemption for that?

It's plausible: It would become the 'Paul Allen Exemption', and could only be granted to one player of Team A. being bought that offseason.
Let's look at who benefits:
Player: Gets a paycheck under the normal terms and becomes an unrestricted free agent. Potentially is paid by two teams.
Other Teams: Player is inexpensive to pick up as a free agent. Generally speaking, teams purchased aren't competitive, so the 'unfair' complaint is unlikely.
Franchise/Owner: Upon shedding the excessive contract, the franchise has less salary and is more valuable to the buyer.
League: The purchasing process is expediated and the team's value goes up.
NBAPA: More money for everyone.
This rule is in the spirit of the 'one-time-luxury-tax-exemption-buyout' last summer.
It's a long shot, but it wouldn't hurt to ask Senor Stern.
