Don't necessarily disagree with you on this but I think Portland management may. The season isn't over and once it is we may or may not find other "stars" who are looking to switch teams.
|
I think if McMillan was solely calling the shots you may be right, but I don't think he will be, nor should he be IMO...
As for other stars looking to switch teams, that list will be small like it usually is and won't contain many "young" stars or "problem free" stars in it, and I seriously doubt ANY of those stars are going to want to come play for a team that was one of the NBA's worst this year...they do like to win too...
and it's not like POR has outrageous money to throw at such players like ATL did for Joe Johnson....
Sorry but I just do not see this as a viable option at all, especially with POR sitting on a very likely top 3 pick...

Re: POR Threee Most Glaring Needs to Address
I'm a little concerned that Nate is convinced we can trade the pick for a "vet" that will be worth trading for (even if you included the pick with Miles, I'm not sure if that Vet would be worth the pick, as Darius has lowered his value pretty much to nill right now).
Also, I think whoever said that Chicago gets Joel, should get used to him being in Black, Red and white.
just chicago's black red and white.

Last year the Blazers had the number 3 pick, so in point you're saying that Webster will be be in many all-star games, which I don't see happening with the West's guards/forwards. Kobe will always be an all-star, Carmelo will be there for many years, Chris Paul. The older guys will be there for the next 5-6 years as well - Duncan, KG, Dirk, Nash, Allen, Brand. And who knows about what the future holds.

Its only 4 deep if you consider the players there legitimate NBA starting SF. At this point, the only player that is worth a frack out of that group is Webster. Outlaw is better then when he came in, but isn't getting it done. Kryapa hustles but lacks talent. Miles, is, well Miles.

A top 3 pick makes it more viable IMO...more teams might be willing to part with a veteran for a top three pick. If we can get ride of Miles and Theo along with the pick for a "star" player it wouldn't be a bad move IMO.
You're right that the players available may not be ones we are interested in but I think Blazer management will take a shot at pulling something like this off.

Re: POR Threee Most Glaring Needs to Address
By getting a "scorer" Portland is not going to solve their issues. By getting defender/rebounder types Portland will solve their issues. If Portland can get a big guy who will rebound and defend, the team will be able to average about 10 more posessions a game, and the opposition about 10 rebounds less a game. Figuring Portland shoots about 44% and the opposition is hitting about 50% these days, that is 10 less points for the opposition and 8 more points a game for Portland. Seeing as how Portland is losing games at a clip of about 20 points a game, that would make it so Portland goes from being roadkill to being a competitive team.
If you bring in a pure "scorer" all that will happen is that the team will score more points but we will still be complaining about horrible forwards who don't rebound the ball or defend.
Optimum situation: One front line player to shore up rebounding/defense/inside play, one scorer.
Lets face it people, this team really needs more then one player.

Re: POR Threee Most Glaring Needs to Address
Hasoos gets the cupie doll. If the blazers get 5 more def. rebounds they get 5 more opportunities to score. If they're shooting 50% that equals 5 more points per game. Also, by the blazers getting 5 more def. rebounds they are denying the opposition 5 chances to score which converts to -5 points for them. That's a 10 point swing in the game in our favor.
I actually think that if we drafted Noah, because of his defense and rebounding he could start immedieatly at the small forward position and we would see at least 5 more rebounds from that position. I think he's quick enough to play the position not mentioning he could also play the 4 and 5. Point guards that put on a growth spurt and grow into big men are rare and have unique skills for big men.

Yeah but as you allude to yourself, those players that mgmt would consider trading the pick for are not going to be made available by their teams...
They may explore it, heck they SHOULD be exploring all options, but if they are samrt they won't pull the trigger on anything but a fantastic deal for POR...and devaluing that pick by coupling it with Miles and\or Theo would be a big mistake on mgmt's part IMO....
Both guys can be dealt in seperate deals...heck POR got rid of Ruben, both Miles and Theo are MUCH easier to move than he was IMO.
