Josh McRoberts?
According to Draftexpress.com, Josh McRoberts is going to declare for the draft. He's a 6'10 PF who was a much-heralded (ranked #1 in his class, ahead of Gerald Green and Martell) High Schooler who was overshadowed significantly by North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough. BUT, he was playing behind Shelden Williams, and it's not clear that his stock has dropped that much (see Williams, Marvin last year). Would anyone who's seen him play care to comment?

maybe if the team gets a 2nd lotto pick, but we don't need our 1st pick to be a 19 year old who's not ready to play a decent to significant role this next year.

This wasn't quite the response I had in mind - have you seen him play?
Besides, you could've said exactly the same thing last year, and it didn't stop our "brain trust" drafting Webster.
Besides #2, you could say exactly the same thing about just about everybody ranked high except possibly Morrison, and I hope that, if it's a choice between someone who contributes immediately but will never be the best player on a good team, and a player who has the chance to be great, we won't panic just because we've been sucky two years in a row. If we wanted immediate contributors, we'd trade the pick, or damn the prognosticators and take either Brandon Roy or Shelden Williams.

I don't recall them saying they wouldn't take a high schooler. But they're hinting strongly that they don't want to take another "project" player.

sure, if it's between that. But it's not necessarily between that. There are a couple early players that will be able to contribute right way and some who will be able to contibute right away and still have a chance to be the "best player on a good team".
It's not like the team is limited to someone who will contibute immediately and "never be the best player on a good team", and a player who "has a chance to be great".

Re: Josh McRoberts?
I pretty much agree with SMiLE, I like McRoberts, and would be happy to get him, but I still like Bargnani, Morrison, Aldridge and Gay, and probably at least one or two others, more.

Re: Josh McRoberts?
I only got to see him twice in the tourney, and he didn't do much to impress me. I really didn't see enough of him to really know though.

Re: Josh McRoberts?
I have seen him play a lot there are several things that I really like about the kid. First off, he has some of the best passing skills for a big man that I have seen in a while. He is good around the rim and given a little more playing time I think will be very good on offence. And, he is a smart team defender. He rotates very well and is athletic enough to be where he want/needs to be. A good shot blocker as well. He is actually a very well rounded basketball player, and his drawbacks come more from inexperience. He showboats a little and has not proven that his Offensive abilities are good enough to demand a double team yet. His man to man defense is OK, but could use more experience to know how to defend. His back to the basket Offence is kind of under-developed.
You take all that I just mentioned and compare him to others in the draft, and I would take him top five. The one thing that keeps him in my mind from being a top 3 pick is he has not proven he has a real passion to win. He has not been given the chance, but he also did not create the opportunity to take the team on his back, if even just for one game.
He has the skills, size, and is athletic enough, just not sure if he has the desire.

Re: Josh McRoberts?
I was hoping he'd stay another year or two under Coach K. Not a wise move IMO.

Re: Josh McRoberts?
In another thread somebody said "Drafting McRoberts is the closest thing we could do to drafting a highschool kid." There's a lot we don't know about McRoberts. I could see his stock going up or down depending on how his workouts go.
From what I've seen of him he seems fundamentally sound. But he doesn't seem great at anything. He can score but he doesn't have offensive moves like Aldridge, his rebounding sold but not that impressive, like Thylo said he can block shots but he's not an impressive shot blocker like Thomas or Noah.
He seems thoroughly mediocre. He'd probably be a good pick because you at least "know" (as much as we can know anything pre-draft) that he'll be a player in the league. There's plenty of other guys like Bargnani, Gay, Thomas, etc. that could either be great or crap. I could see a team picking McRoberts instead of one of those guys because they think he's a "safe" pick. Seems like a silly thing to say about a guy that hasn't played a lot, but I'm saying it anyway.
I put him in the same category as Brandon Roy. If I've got a top pick I'd go with Aldridge, Morrison or Bargnani. But if something awful happens and we end up with a mid lottery pick I'd be happy if we took 'em.

Re: Josh McRoberts?
A nice role player, maybe a 3rd option some day. No thank you with our lottery pick unless somehow we pick lower than 7th......even then it's a stretch
Let's play a game shall we
Christian Laetner
Danny Ferry
Joe Wolf
I'm sure there are a few glaring omitions, but these are all white PF who played in the ACC that were nice players, but nothing special.

Re: Josh McRoberts?
Are we really discussing a guy who averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds a game for our pick, which more than likely will be a #1 or #2 pick...
I think eventually in about 3-4 years McRoberts will be able to contribute to an NBA team, but right now he is a major project and has virtually no offensive game besides a dunk and when his skinny frame gets into the paint in the NBA he won't be able to do anything...
I wouldn't waste anything high than #15 pick on him...

Re: Josh McRoberts?
Their is absolutley no way I would use a top 8 pick on him. If we trade up and get another lotto pick, I would be all for getting him as a big man of the future(If Aldridge, Thomas, Noah, Andrea and maby O'Bryant are gone).
