Actually it is unusual. When most young players are asked who they would compare their games after they usually want to be compared to themselves. Morrison flat out said if he was considered a poor man's Bird he'd be ok with that. Patterning your game and just idolizing someone are different.

It may be rare for a player to be willing to be "a poor man's version" of someone. I'd bet that 95%+ of players, at one point or another, pattern their game after some great player.
