Los Angeles Dons - worst attendance in AAFA, disbanded in 1949 with several teams joining the NFL: the Dons were not one of them.
Los Angeles Chargers move to San Diego in 1961
Los Angeles Rams move to nearby Aneheim in 1980, then to St. Louis in 1995
Los Angeles Raiders move to Oakland in 1995
In your opinion does this make LA a place where football can't survive?

The Bombers were one of the 35 out of 40 teams that did not sustain from the NBL.

In 1957, the team advanced to the NBA Finals, losing to the Boston Celtics in a double-overtime thriller in game seven. In 1958, the Hawks again advanced to the NBA Finals under coach Alex Hannum and captured their only NBA Championship in game 6 against the Celtics.
The Hawks remained one the NBA's premier teams for the next decade. In 1960, under coach Ed Macauley, the team advanced to the Finals yet again, but lost- again- to the Celtics in yet another game seven thriller. The following year, with the acquisition of rookie Lenny Wilkens, the Hawks repeated their success, but met the Celtics in the Finals again and lost in five games.
The next few years the Hawks remained contenders, every year advancing deep into the playoffs and also capturing several division titles. In 1968, however, with new owners, Atlanta real estate developer Tom Cousins and Georgia governor Carl Sanders, the team moved to Atlanta, Georgia.

Seems like the Hawks had their best years in St. Louis and its movement to Atlanta was done by Atlanta developers and the Georgia GOVERNOR? Seems hardly to be the fault of the city and its fans.

Re: Checketts?
St Louis is not LA. Your comparison is apples and oranges.
LA will always be a tantalizing market. There are more people in LA than all of Missouri.
Back to my point... St Louis-wonderful town, great fans, great support.......but saturated market.

Just to be clear: I have taken no position about St. Louis's ability to support an NBA team now and into the future.
Clearly they don't have an NBA team, and they either have never had one or have lost one... just like every city. I don't think that them losing a team almost 40 years ago has anything to do with anything, personally.

Re: Checketts?
You guys don't seem to have a problem with your Blazers moving to St. Louis, but when I mention Vancouver, you swear at me and throw turkeys.
When I posted the link about the Vancouver group, I had 31 replies of swearing, hatred, rude comments, but I see with this Checketts thread you all seem to be rather calm.
If they can't move to Vancouver cause of the site agreement with Portland, then how the hell can they move to St. Louis?
And as for St. Louis being a great sports town, we've got a nice sports town here, and we have the Winter Olympics here in 2010. You think the International Olympic Committee is going to hand an Olympics over to some non-sports town?
You guys don't seem to have the problem with St. Louis that you apparently have with Vancouver.

difference scenario. If there had been a "StLouisBall" poster who did what you did, he'd be treated no differently.

Re: Checketts?
The reason people are calm, besides what Hap pointed out about there being no bratty StLouisBall posting about "OMG MY TOWN IS GOING TO GET YOUR TEAM AND YOU CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT". Also, BenMaller is a horrible source. He is unreliable, and so people don't take this seriously.

Re: Checketts?
From my perspective, I just find it much more likely that the NBA would work in St. Louis than I do in Vancouver.

Re: Checketts?
I think STL would be a good NBA town ...
... but I thought the former owners of the ABA Spirits of St. Louis were still being paid TV revenue money when that team was disbanded in the wake of the ABA/NBA merger in the 1970s? And by this, if I understand it correctly, the agreement was basically NO NBA team in that market? I'm confused ...
I could have seen the Hornets relocating to STL post-K had they not gone to Oklahoma City, actually.

Re: Checketts?
When I opened up the old bbb.net page and glanced at the thread titles, I saw this one, titled "Checketts?" and for some reason assumed it was a thread about a disease. Not sure why really, I guess "Checketts" sounds like some sort of degenerative disease.
After reading the premise, my original thoughts were somewhat realized.

Re: Checketts?
I can't see how out of town investors are going to get the team over local investors...provided they have the necessary funds...and both Wattles and Porter/Jeld-Wen appear to have that...
