Patterson Eying Potential Trades (Quick)
From: The Big O
Quote:
Let's make a deal.
That's the primary goal this week of Steve Patterson, the Trail Blazers president and acting general manager, as he heads a contingent of team personnel that will attend the NBA's predraft camp in Orlando, Fla.
Patterson said he will be looking for trade scenarios to improve a Blazers team that finished 21-61 last season, the NBA's worst record, and there is no better place, perhaps, to set the groundwork for a deal than at the predraft camp........

The Blazers will begin ushering in the top-tier prospects to Tualatin next week. On June 15, the Blazers will work out Washington guard Brandon Roy, Gonzaga forward Adam Morrison, Connecticut forward Rudy Gay and Villanova guard Randy Foye. Texas forward LaMarcus Aldridge is tentatively scheduled for June 14. . . .
Not expected to work out for the Blazers is Louisiana State guard/forward Tyrus Thomas, who has stated he will only work out for the teams with the top three picks (Toronto, Chicago and Charlotte). Patterson said that tactic could hurt Thomas. "Usually a workout is an important part of the evaluation for a high draft pick," Patterson wrote. "It can be an influencing factor, sometimes significantly so. It is also a risk for the player if he doesn't get drafted where he expects to. When that happens, there can be a free fall as was the case last year with Gerald Green or years ago with Nick Van Exel. There is often an agent that overplays his hand in every draft and costs his client dearly. There can also be promises that just don't work out to be so guaranteed."

This is a disaster waiting to happen. Patterson is clueless.

Re: Patterson Eying Potential Trades (Quick)
This makes me nervous. I'd much rather have had Nash doing the draft and draft-related trades than Patterson. I hope he's only a figure-head, but with the ego typical of people like Patterson, and the ego (and, IMO, ignorance) he's displayed in some of the colorful language he's used in reference to some of our players, I don't like it (or him).
Edit: I agree with tlong -- that was exactly my immediate reaction. I imagine the other GMs are just licking their chops right now in anticipation of the crappy deals they are going to offer us.

OK, well, the disaster has already happened. Perhaps, you meant to say that Steve Patterson is the Ray Nagin of the Portland Trail Blazers?

Any more clueless than Nash? I guess the difference with Patterson is that he has shown success in the past.
I know many poster liked Nash (because he would return emails?), but I never thought Nash had the credentials to warrant being GM for the Blazers. On the other hand, many don't like Patterson, but he has success in many Texas sport franchises.
We will see, but I'm guessing Patterson can wheel and deal as good if not better than Nash. OK Patterson bashers, have at it . . .

Except that all the success the Patterson has had has been on the business side of teams not on the player personel side.

Re: Patterson Eying Potential Trades (Quick)
Oh, I'm sure Patterson can wheel and deal. I'm sure Patterson is a stern business man. I doubt he has the eye for talent or the basketball vision, or the expertise regarding the players we'd all like him to have at this critical juncture of the Blazers' future.
Nash spent all his time looking at players. Patterson spends his time running the business. Why would anyone assume Patterson is qualified to make personnel decisions at this point in the process? (BTW: I'm not a Nash lover.)
I would love to be wrong about this. I just hope he lets Pritchard and Gabriel call the shots.

Lots of people around here think Nash was also clueless. Ditto Paul Allen. How is it that every executive of the Trail Blazer's organization is "clueless"? Doesn't that seem rather unlikely?

It really doesn't matter who is in charge. There is a few people here who will ALWAYS say the guy in charge is clueless.

Re: Patterson Eying Potential Trades (Quick)
I doubt Patterson's going to have the control you're all afraid he'll have. Pritchard, McMillan, the rest of the coaching staff, and all of the scouts will be on hand this week. Patterson's experience with pulling off deals though should be discounted. He does have about 12 to 13 years experience in an NBA Front Office. He'll have plenty of wisdom to rely on.
