The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
Hmmmmmmmmm..............
From: LA Times
Quote:
In his continuing search for an NBA franchise for the Pond, Mighty Ducks owner Henry Samueli is exploring the possibility of buying the Portland Trail Blazers and moving them to Anaheim.
In April, Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen indicated he would sell the team. On Wednesday, Allen's company and the owners of Portland's Rose Garden arena announced they would consider joint financial opportunities, including a sale of both properties. The parties have retained the investment bank Morgan Stanley, a source said Thursday.
"We are certainly aware of the recent news out of Portland," Pond President Tim Ryan said. "It is something we are following very closely."...

Re: The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
Since Allen isn't likely declaring bankruptcy .... what about the lease agreement?
Plus, the team and arena are being put up for sale together. Why would the Anaheim guy buy the arena, too?
That, and Helen Jung said a relocation fee would probably cost upwards of $60 million ... why would someone pay 20% (presumably) of the the team/arena cost to move a team? Seems like a pretty high number.
Besides, would Stern approve such a move? They already have the Clippers and Lakers!

Re: The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
so...they'll be the Portland Trail Blazers of Vancouver, by way of St Louis and Anaheim?
this is no different than the articles that say that a baseball team is moving here. It's meaningless, and just clutter.

Re: The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
No matter what the potential move scenario is, there are a dozen reasons why that move won't happen. But a move is definitely more likely than some here seem willing to admit.

If the guy's really dedicated to bringing a basketball team to Anaheim maybe it would be worth it for him to buy the team and the arena together (Which I think is the only way Allen will sell the team. Despite what people think of him as an owner I think he's a good guy and will do is best to sell to someone that he thinks will keep the team in Portland.), pay the 60 mil to move the team and lose money every year on the arena until he can find some sucker to buy it.

Re: The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
If the prevention of the team moving is based on the contract with the city, that could mean trouble. I could easily see Potter agreeing to a lump sum cash settlement in the 10s of millions to buy out of the contract. Potter is not a "sports" mayor. He views the city as unique in a lot of areas and does not think a sports franchise is essential for that "uniqueness." Waive 40-50 million in fornt of him and I say he bites.

just because I could get struck by lightning 12 times today, doesn't mean that me not willing to admit it is possible, is a bad thing.

Re: The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
Check This Out
Quote:
Whoever finally stepped up would need to have the offer accepted by Allen and Portland Arena Management and then approved by the NBA Board of Governors, who will probably meet sometime in late October.
One interested local group, fronted by ex-Blazer Terry Porter, says it has been bolstered by a couple of new investors — Jeld-Wen Inc. and Scott Thomason.
A source told the Portland Tribune this week that Jeld-Wen’s contribution is in the neighborhood of $25 million — a small portion of what will be needed to swing a deal estimated in the $300 million range.
Thomason’s presence is ironic for a franchise that has attempted to distance itself from issues of poor behavior by its players. The auto dealer’s business was once the subject of investigations by the state Department of Justice, Bureau of Labor and Industries and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
And then there was that ugly little felony hit-and-run charge, you might remember.
It’s just as likely a buyer will surface who hasn’t gone public yet. And it’s even more likely it will be an out-of-state person or group. The Blazers never have had local ownership.
By the time the Allen era comes to a close — and if the price of the whole package is within reason, that could come by the start of next season — a new owner will be a welcome sight.

potter isn't the only one who gets to decide how much the city goes for, in a scenario like this.

Re: The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
Ok, LA is huge and so is the sports market but........
How can a market with:
-LA Kings
-Anaheim Mighty Ducks
-LA Dodgers
-LA Angels
-LA Lakers
-LA Clippers
-LA Avengers
-USC Trojans
-UCLA Bruins
Be better than Portland with 1 single pro franchise? I don't see it as a worthy investment to move a team to Anahiem. Even the Clip's have struggled with attendance until very recently.
There are only so many pieces of the sports dolar pie to go around.

Re: The Anaheim Trail Blazers??
They are attempting to sell the arena and the team together so that the team will stay in Portland. That doesn't mean that they necessarily will though. If mr Anaheim comes to Allen and offers 15million over the asking price for the team Paul might think long and hard about selling them seperately. It's not like Paull gives a **** about PAM and helping them out. He takes his $$ and walks away..
