Vegas Summer League
I was just checking out their website. Wow, we don't have long to wait to see the newest Blazers. First game is July 7th.
Another thing, I was looking through some of last year's stats. It's really interesting to see which players played well and then went on to have a very comparable seasons.
Dwight Howard: 19 pts, 8 reb - Did about that in the NBA.
Chris Kaman: 20 pts, 9 reb - breakout season for the Clippers, 12 pts, 10 reb.
Nate Robinson: 18 ppg. - Showed he could really score at the NBA level as well. 10 ppg in 21 minutes.
Chris Paul: 15 pts, 5 assists - And did better than that during the season.
Channing Frye: 13 pts, 6 reb - Just about exactly what he averaged for the year.
Kevin Martin: 19 pts, 5 reb - Averaged close to that when Wells was out.
Even Martell averaged 13 pts, which was just about what he did during the last part of the season, when he was getting playing time.
Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule. But summer league seems to have been a decent gauge of how well a guy would do this season, if he actually got playing time. Hopefully, no matter who we select, we get some impressive numbers from the guy we draft.
It makes you wonder about Travis Outlaw: 19 pts, 6 rebounds during the summer league. Maybe he just needed a year under Nate's system to get his mind right and he'll come out playing even better this season. Should be interesting. We'll have a really strong summer league team.

Re: Vegas Summer League
I remember Qyntel Woods blowing up in the Salt Lake City summer league. I don't think it's a true barometer of how a player will play in the regular season.

Re: Vegas Summer League
Yeah, Qyntel blows that up (in a puff of smoke).
And if Portland gets Morrison, Gay or Roy, I think Travis will end up in the shadows as any of them will get more PT because of their more aggressive play and better understanding of the game. Travis should be hoping for Aldridge.

As I said, there are exceptions.
Look at the stats. There IS a pretty decent correlation. 80% of the players who played well in the summer league, went on to play well in the NBA. If that's not a pretty decent correlation, then what is?

I think the only thing you have to worry about is if your high draft pick doesn't play well in the summer league. That might be a cause for concern.
If we take MNorrison, Roy, Aldridge, etc, and they tank in the summer league it's time to be concerned.

Re: Vegas Summer League
Personally I can't wait as I'll be there. I'll take a **** load of pictures, and fill you guys in on who looks good. But last year Telfair and Outlaw really tore it up. I can't wait to see Telfair, Webster, Outlaw and whoever we draft.

Re: Vegas Summer League
I remember when Bo Outlaw had a ridiculous summer league averaging like 25ppg and he hasn't done squat in the league...
Summer league to me isn't a good gauge of how well a player does in the league...
Unless of course Morrison has a monster summer league

Not only that, but I could envision Morrison and Khryapa contrasting eachother quite well at the small forward position. Could be a great lasting combo.

I agree that's more important. That is, you're saying that playing well in Summer League is necessary but not sufficient for succeeding in the league. However, I seem to recall the Bulls' Hinrich sucking in Summer League and he turned out all right. And Tim Duncan was very average, as I recall.
So:
Summer League not sufficient for good player:
Qyntel Woods, John Salmons, Nikolas Tschtschthingy
Summer League not necessary:
Hinrich, Duncan

Re: Vegas Summer League
Summer league is alot like practice. Some guys are good practice guys. You play Joel this summer down in Vegas and he probably avgs. 15 and 10. Not a true indicative of regular season productivity.
