Celtics unhappy with Telfair?
That's certainly one conclusion you could draw from this bit of news:

The Celtics reportedly continue to be the front-runner as far as interest in Iverson goes, but all indications are that they will have to find another team or two to come up with the players that the Sixers want in exchange for Iverson.

If Telfair had come in and blown away the Celtics' brass in summer league, I can't imagine them still wanting to pursue Iverson. If the Celtics do land Iverson, however, that sets Telfair's career back significantly. He goes back to being a bench player until Iverson retires--or he gets traded again.

How can you draw that conclusion from that article. Iverson is widely considered one of the top players in the NBA. It would be like Portland bringing in Ray Allen and us thinking it was because they didn't like Martell Webster. When in fact it's just because he's Ray freaking Allen.

Wow TH that's a huge stretch to think a team who seemingly wants to add anopther star to help Paul Pierce would be dissatisfied simply because they are pursueing Allen Iverson.
To a team trying to win now, what would be better? Iverson and his 33ppg and 7apg or Telfair and his 9ppg and 3apg?
Keep in mind Paul Pierce is calling the shots in Boston.

Re: Celtics unhappy with Telfair?
Doesnt Iverson play more SG than PG anyway? Pierce at SF, Iverson at SG, and Telfair at PG.

Yeah that's very conceivable...but a 5'10" / 6'1" backcourt would be so...soooooo, short.

Yep, I'm not sure the C's want to start the league's shrimpiest backcourt if they're really in "win now" mode. Whether or not Boston would be looking to play Iverson on the ball, I'd look for Telfair to be included in the trade package.

If Portland were aggressively going after Ray Allen, I would definitely take that as a sign that they weren't confident in Webster's abilities at shooting guard. Same goes for the Celtics' pursuit of Iverson. It tells me that they are not confident enough in Telfair to hand him the reins of the team.

Like others have said, Boston is trying to win now.

Re: Celtics unhappy with Telfair?
I thought I read somewhere a week ago that the Celtics were okay with starting a Telfair/Iverson backcourt at least in particular situations/games?

Re: Celtics unhappy with Telfair?
I remember the Celtics working on a package sending out the #7 pick (Randy Foye) + filler in exchange for Iverson. So there's not much of a difference sending out Telfair out on a deal for Iverson. During the process they were able to get out of Lafrenz and Dickau's contract in exchange for Theo Ratliff's contract. I don't think Telfair is as appealing as Foye from the Sixers standpoint, but I think he could be a piece in a deal to land Iverson if there is another team that is interested in a three way trade.

Re: Celtics unhappy with Telfair?
I think there is a certain relationship between what happens with Iverson and what happens with Telfair. Obviously, because they play similar positions and they're of similar (small) stature. If Boston can figure out a deal that brings Iverson in, I would imagine there's a strong possibility that Cheeks will get a reunion with Sebastian Telfair out of the deal.
It's not that Boston couldn't keep both of them, it's just that the Celtics would be left with a dilemma about how best to rotate their guards: consistently play the smallest backcourt in the NBA (by far)? Or sit Telfair, because of his size, and play a combo guard at PG, thus basically wasting the #7 draft pick on a young reserve whose development is being stunted? You know Iverson's going to play 40 minutes if they bring him in...
Interesting stuff to watch. Of course, if Telfair's involved, the deal has to wait three months, right?
