Re: Roy will be our PG before the end of the year.

IMO a combo guard is just a short shooting guard - iverson, marbury, francis, both stoudamires, dixon, etc... and i dont like any of them because they all tend to be ball hogs.

meh i dunno

jack and roy in the backcourt feels like a far more effective option than roy and webster.

Why isn't Iverson a combo guard? He creates for himself and for others, can handle the ball, plays one position on offense and another on defense.

Kobe plays SG on both ends of the floor but does as much, if not more ball handling and creating than any Laker PG.

It seems like your definition of a combo guard is a player who is the height of a PG, can only defend PG's, yet would rather shoot before create for others. If that's your definition, then yes, they all suck.

Does LeBron and/or Joe Johnson fit your definition? If not, why?

I see it the other way. I would rather have him start at PG now then give way to Jack and play more 2G down the stretch.

Re: Roy will be our PG before the end of the year.

Our Trail Blazers won the Championship with two "guards" playing. Both were moderate height 6-4 and 6-2 respectively. Both could handle the ball, make good passes, and hit open shots.

Hollins and J Davis. Twardzik and Gilliam too.

Re: Roy will be our PG before the end of the year.

Nate's said that he only played PG in the SL to see if he could handle it during emergency times when we have like 2 PG's and he can take a few min. at PG. He's mostly gonna play 2/3. That's atleast what Nate has been saying.

Did Nate really say Roy was going to play 2/3? I got the impression that the team thinks Roy is a 1-2-3, but the 1 and the 3 will be quite limited with more time at the 1 than the 3.

LeBron is a PointForward ala Scottie Pippen with more offensive firepower.

Joe Johnson is somewhat of a combo guard I suppose.....

Whenver I think of comboguard, as mentioned, its Marbury/Francis. Just not the mentality I like. I'm a fan of DEFINED positions on the floor.

What you just said is closer to what he was actually telling me at the dinner now that I think about it. They don't see him starting at PG, but see him playing there. But his position is at the 2.

Re: Roy will be our PG before the end of the year.

As for combo-guards, I'd say there are two basic sorts -- guys who are short for SGs and guys who are tall for PGs. Generally speaking, it's the second category I'm most interested in. We know all the guys in the first category -- guys like Iverson, Dixon, etc. For the second category I'd suggest players like Brent Barry and Joe Johnson. Arguably even tall PGs who rarely play off the ball, such as Kidd and Magic, could be thought of as combo-guards because of their abilities to switch defensively -- Magic, in particular, was not an outstanding defender but it never much mattered because the Lakers would just switch on everything. Even Terry Porter was nearly as much a 1/2 as Drexler was a 2/3 -- one of my favorite stretches of Blazer basketball, short as it was, was the period when the team would occasionally run Rod Strickland at the point and Terry at the two spot.

Er... why? Are you thinking that Jack's not going to be ready to go? Reports are that Jack expects to be 100% by the time camp starts and even if he's not, he was arguably playing at something like 65% last season and did pretty well.

Even if Jack really isn't going to be ready, I think I'd rather see Blake or even Dickau at the point, rather than ask Roy to learn the position and then move over -- I'm thinking about the experiments with guys like Miles and Woods at the point. I realize that Roy is almost certain to have more success there than that but I'd still be inclined to make the transition as easy as possible for him and it's not as if Jack is clearly head and shoulders above Blake and Dickau at this point (though I certainly hope he will be soon).

Iverson has run the point for Phili the last couple years averaging 7+ Assists. Iguadala has been their 2 guard.

whoopee, and I still like him better as their SG with that mentality.
