It's OFFICIAL: Welcome to Portland Magloire

“We are very excited to bring someone of Jamaal’s stature to our organization,” said Trail Blazers President Steve Patterson. “He made the All-Star team just two short years ago and was a big part of Milwaukee gaining a playoff spot in the East this past season. He’s an excellent rebounder who gives us depth and talent up front and you can never have too many quality bigs in the NBA.”

Re: It's OFFICIAL: Welcome to Portland Magloire (Merged)
I'm scratching my head. I mean, I know Milwaukee got Bogut, but as Patterson said, you can't have too many quality bigs. They trade him for a decent but not stellar point guard, a center who has done nothing and a back up power forward who would be buried on the bench? He is healthy. He is productive. He is apparently of good character. Won a national championship in college. And he is Canadian (I admit to being partial to Canadians).
BTW, I wonder why Toronto was not going after him? So few native Canadians in the NBA and he's from Toronto, looked like a natural. Not that I am complaining.

If he delivers up another season like his last TWO, you will then know very well why Milwaukee chose the others over him and why Toronto did not make a huge push for him when they easily could have made a trade for him.
He has had a big dropoff the last two seasons. He is big, skilled and durable, which are very, very nice traits for a bigman. So, don't get me wrong, I am very happy that we have just traded (essentially) small for big. But, don't think you make small for big trades unless the big has issues. (or the small is very good).
What has been missing has been his (offensive) productivity and effieciency. Guy has been having scoring problems, and yet complaining about his role. THAT will not go over very well with Portland fans.
However, this being his contract year, we may see a very different Jamal.
The great part about that situation, is Portland will be able to make a decision about Jamal and have options. No matter how he plays, Portland can act. If they like him, they have his Bird rights to be in the best position to keep him. If they don't like him, they can trade him before the deadline. Or, they can try to work a sign and trade in the summer. Or, he walks for cap relief.

Even Darius put his best foot forward when there was $$ on the line. I doubt if D.Miles will ever average over 50% FG shooting ever again. Oh wait, he will get another contract in 4 years

He has had a drop-off in scoring, but I don't think it's all that big considering the circumstances.
First, I'm going to throw out the 04-05 season as he was injured for most of that season. I'll just compare 2003-2004 - his best (all-star) season and 2005-2006, his most recent season.
The first thing I notice is he played 11.2% fewer minutes (30.1 vs. 33.9 MPG) per game in 2006 than he did in 2004. So, you would expect a corresponding drop-off in his PPG and RPG number. His RPG went down by only 7.4% (10.3 vs. 9.5 RPG) in spite of the 11.2% reduction in PT. That's another way of saying his reb/40 min. actually increased (from 12.2 to 12.6).
His PPG dropped by 32.3% - considerably more than the 11.2% reduction in PT. I see two main contributing factors to this reduced ofensive output. The biggest factor is his number of field goal attempts per game went down by 24.2%. In New Orleans, he was their second option on offense after Baron Davis. In Milwaukie, he was the third or fourth option after Michael Redd, Bobby Simmons and possibly Andrew Bogut. So, it's only natural his scoring would decrease.
The other big factor was a free throws. Both is FT% and FTA decreased markedly (75.1% - 53.5% and 5.7 - 4.1). The reduced FTA can be attributed to the reduced PT and reduced role in the team's offense. So, his plummetting FT% is really the biggest red flag in his reduced offesnive output (his FG% was actually pretty consistant at 47.3% in 2004 vs. 46.7% in 2006).
So, get him working on those free throws and he can hopefully become as efficient at scoring as he was in his all-star season of 2004. Honestly, it's his rebounding that I view as the most significant upgrade. The fact that he's more of an offensive threat than Theo or Joel is an added bonus. If he can average 10/10, or even 9/9 it will be the best production the Blazers have gotten out of their starting center since Sabonis averaged 16/10 way back in 1998 - the last time a Blazer center average more than 9 RPG (Dale Davis came close in with 8.8 RPG back in 2002). The point is, even with his reduced offensive output, Jamaal Magloire is an upgrade over any center the Blazer have had in several years.

Sounds like Magloire didn't play well in the Bucks style of play.

The Bucks acquired Magloire, 28, before the beginning of last season from the New Orleans Hornets. The six-foot-11 centre averaged 9.2 points and 9.5 rebounds in 2005-06, but he couldn't match the up-tempo pace Milwaukee tried to played.

If you consider that we are trading Theo Ratliff's minutes and role on the team for Jamaal Magloire, then Jamaal will seem like a rebounding god compared to Theo.
Jamaal is a very good rebounder, and has continued to rack up decent numbers, despite his offensive woes. If Portland can find a way to get Jamaal quality touches and get him into a flow, I bet he would be very happy to battle even more on the glass.

I was wondering myself about the system, and if Nate will be a better fit for Jamaal. At first blush it seems like Nate will be better for Jamaal (and most other true bigs) with his preference for low mistake, grind out, half-court style.

Offensive woes? If we'd had a 10 ppg, 47% fg shooter the past few years at center, we would have considered it offensive brilliance. Even the freethrow shooting isn't bad compared to what we're used to.
