The Outlaw: Travis
So we have come to Travis Outlaw's fourth year in the NBA. On September 18th Travis will turn 22 years old, and at this point he has played 1967 minutes in the NBA to this point. To put that number in perspective, Jarrett Jack played 1597 minutes during his rookie campaign. I Outlaw's first season he logged a total of 19 minutes the entire season. This was followed up with only 793 minutes in his second season, Even Martell Webster logged 1064 minutes in his first season, while fellow high schooler Sebastian Telfair received 1330 during his rookie season.
This past season only Martell played less minutes than Outlaw out of those four players. So I am wondering, could we see something more from Outlaw this year? In terms of stats, Outlaw has been somewhat of an enigma.

There are a few signs of encouragement though. For instance his turnovers stayed almost the same with an additional 400 minutes of playing time. That is a good sign, but on a negative note his fouls ballooned. While his rebounding saw some growth, his offensive rebounding needs to get much better. The fact that his assists, steals, and blocks did not see much growth is a little disturbing as well.
Stepping away from the stats, as a season ticket holder I had the opportunity to watch Travis live many times. Over the three years I have seen a lot of growth in terms of his understanding of the game. I remember in his second year all he would do was stand in one spot on offense. Last season he started to move more, and he started to play some okay defense. This is the year, as they say, that Travis must put it together. His NBA career depends upon it. If there ever was an argument for the NBDL, Travis would be it. Imagine if Travis could have played his entire rookie season in the NBDL, that would have been great. So for now I have high hopes for Travis becomming a decent player, but it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure of his first contract year. I don't think Travis is lazy, I don't think he is unathletic in any way shape or form. I just think he was immature for his age, but I hope that all changes as we start the 2006-2007 campaign. I think Travis is a very nice person, and if he can develop some competitive fire this year, he could be a nice piece of a team I belive can make a run at the playoffs.

Re: The Outlaw: Travis
He was stuck behind other SFs until last season, when his munutes went up. Before that, playing in garbage time, he couldn't even put up good garbage numbers. I went to games, I stayed until the end, and I saw Outlaw miss wide open dunks and get zero rebounds.
I would have expected a player's stats to go down if he got a chance to finally play real minutes, but in his case his stats were horrible to start with. Here's hoping he improves this year.
Try a search of this forum, there are plenty of "this is Travis' chance" threads.

He should be a good player this season for the Blazers now that he will get some decent playing time.

Re: The Outlaw: Travis
I think that Travis has until the trade deadline to prove that he is worth it. I don't think that he is going to be a Blazer after that point. Travis just doesn't have the basketball IQ to go with all that physical talent.

Travis is fighting right now to ride the pine in the NBA. I used to have such high hopes for him, but now, I would consider it a huge success if he could just become a decent back up.

Re: The Outlaw: Travis
I remember many comments last year on Travis not knowing where he was supposed to be on defense and offense. I was worried then that if he couldn't pick this stuff up in practice...no wonder his minutes were limited. I'm thinking that Travis would be better suited on a team with a more open style of play with less emphasis on set plays and such....HEY...how 'bout Philly.
Peace

Re: The Outlaw: Travis
Martell, Jack, and Bassy got more time because they were better. Especially Martell.
But I expect T-Law to get more PT because he has improved greatly since his first season and he has devoloped a nice looking Jump shot. He has long, arms, and can jump like no other which makes it even more difficult for anyone to black him
But Travis it the Dumbest player on the team. He only knew one play last season. Even ask Mike Rice, he told me

Interesting thought and.... how about the Suns? There's already talk that they might not resign Marion. Could the Blazers put together a package that'd be enticing enough? Maybe something like Magloire, Dixon, Outlaw, cash and picks? I realize that Marion's worth more on the court than would be coming back to Phoenix but if they're really trying to cut payroll....

Re: The Outlaw: Travis
I dissagree with those who say Travis doesn't have the BB IQ to be successful. I've seen enough games where he played well on both sides of the court - making good passes, moving w/o the ball, staying with his man, taking good shots/not forcing others, rebounding and boxing out, etc. However, there are MANY nights he looks totally lost. It seems to me that this is more a concentration problem than a IQ problem. I think he lacks focus, and I'm starting to think that he may never get beyond that. Like I said, on the nights his focus is there - he's a quality player. On the other nights he leaves his man wide open for 3 straight jumpers, or fogets to box a guy out on the free throw line . . . he looks like an idiot. I used to be a big supported of Travis, but I was dissapointed by how little progress he made last year. Many people thought he was headed for a break out season - even people on a National Level. I don't think that depth at SF was the problem. I just don't think Nate has any patience for a guy who plays so unfocused at times. I don't see any reason to think we'll see a more focused Outlaw this season either. Although I didn't watch any summer league games, the reports were that he played pretty average. Maybe we should have moved the guy a year ago. It's probably too late now to expect much in return.
