Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

I'm not sure about several on this quacks list but IMHO the Blazers gave themselves much more flexibility with the Mags trade...either the plays great and we have the opportunity to resign him or we can move him or get the salary relief next summer after Aldridge has gained a year's worth of development.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

I think the Bucks have made several "WTF" moves, this among them.
However, this is a lot better than the Sporting News, who wondered if Magliore was a secret alcoholic, etc etc becaue you can supposedly list all the good citizens who become felons in Portland.
There is not one player who came to Portland and committed a felony. Marijuana possession and traffic violations are not felonies. Ruben Patterson's felony conviction was when he was in Seattle.
There have, of course, been a number of current or former NBA players charged with felonies: Kobe Bryant, Eddie Johnson, Eddie Griffin, Jason Richardson, Jayson Williams. What they have in common is that none of them ever played for Portland.

ESPN's Antonio Williams wrote this... he is dead wrong about #7 IMO.
That list makes no bloody sense. Banks was well worth MLE money. The Lakers can use another shooter. The Knicks didn't exactly break the bank for Jeffries. Blake for Mags could be a major steal!

What criteria, if any, is this twit using??

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

Terrible list. Here are my 7 most disappointing moves...

1. Hornets signing Peja to a deal worthy of a franchise player, when he is clearly not worth that much

2. Nuggets re-sign Nene to insane deal after missing an entire year and never averaging over like 12 points his entire career

3. Knicks sign Jared Jefferies, further increasing their guard/foreward glut and giving a role-playing SF who is a non-factor offensivley in every aspect other than running and dunking on the fast break the entire MLE. Shandon Anderson part 2 anyone?

4. Toronto trades Charlie V. for TJ Ford. This deal will be a scar on the Toronto franchise in 5 years. Charlie showed more in one season than TJ has in 3. He is a Rasheed Wallace clone. Regardless of adding Andrea, TO could have had a matchup nightmare at 3/4/5 with Charlie/Andrea/Bosh.

5. Washington signs Darius Songalia to a Brian Cardinal esque' contract. I like Songalia, but he is nowhere near a MLE player.

6. Milwaukie trade Mags for Blake, Skinner and Ha. This was a bad one for the Bucks. They should have gotten more in return, as 10/10 centers certaintly dont grow on trees. Blake is a decent PG, but not a proper return for Mags.

7. Chicago trades JR Smith for 2 2nd round picks and Howard Eisley. JR is certaintly a problem child, but come on, he has undeniable talent. Chicago should have either held on to him, or waited for a better offer. This one could look bad once Smith starts meshing with Melo and breaks out.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

I may be in the minority, but I agree that getting Magloire makes you say "what the ****" when there's Aldridge, LaFrentz, Pryz and Zach. That's 5 guys in and out. The odd men out are going to be Aldridge and LaFrentz - the number 2 overall pick and a $11M a year guy barring some crazy trade that comes up in 2-3 weeks.

And yes Milwaukee screwed up as well. They went from a big and consistent front court to a small one, albeit, young front court.

Magloire, Bogut, Gadzuric, Smith --> Bogut, Villanueva, Gadzuric, Skinner, Ha.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

Really a dumb article if they are including any of the Blazers's moves this Summer. If ESPN can't be a fan of what they have done this Summer then they're just not going to like anything. The Magloire trade is almost risk free. Expiring contract for big man in his prime who rebounds for three reserves. What more does ESPN want?

If they could figure out how to deal Miles without taking on too much garbage I would say this is the best off season I've ever seen Portland (and possibly any lottery team), ever had.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

I like how all of their top moves are teams improving themselves by adding a quality player. Since when did getting a guy that helps your team become a bad thing? I don't care if you overpaid a couple mil per year on a guy. You still got him. He's gonna be a good addition to your team.

Did Chicago signing Ben Wallace make it onto this douche bag's list?

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

whoever wrote this is an idiot. magloire is better then pryzbilla and gives us size and help on the boards. the move that should be on that list is signing joel pryzbilla. If magloire puts up 10 and 10 over 82 games, that is fine with me. way better then 6, 6 and 2 blocks in 56 games.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

It's just an odd article and an even more odd choice to include Magloire.

Notice that all six of the other deals involved free agents... only Jamaal was not.

I'm not even upset over it because it's just so nonsensical to me...

I'm not sure I follow your logic, Dean. It sounds like your convinced Magloire is among the top three bigs currently on the team, and thus will be getting PT, but you're not sure they should've picked him up? Myself, even if the order of addition could be shuffled, I don't think I'd make very different decisions -- I'd rather have LaFrentz than Theo, if only to have ranging shooting as an option for the 4/5 slots, I'd rather have Joel than Theo (if that'd somehow been a choice) and I'd still have picked Aldridge where we did even knowing about these other bigs, as I think he may well be the best of the lot of them inside of a couple years.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves

the thing is, we're paying lafrentz $11M, $12M and then $13M to sit on the bench for the next three years.

and aldridge wont get any PT after coming off a really good year at texas.

i dont know. i'm keeping my fingers crossed

Okay, I guess I can see that. For myself, though:

A) I really don't care how much Allen's paying LaFrentz to sit on the bench. Better yet, I take it as a good sign that he's willing to -- it's a sign he's getting more interested in putting a competitive team on the court (whether because he's trying to improve resale value or actually wants to own a better team I don't really care);

B) I think it's entirely possible that without having done the Theo for LaFrentz part of the trade, the team might well not currently have Roy;

C) given the skill-sets of the rest of the bigs, I'd rather have LaFrentz coming off the bench than Theo and;

D) it seems to me that Aldridge can make most of the gains I want to see him make this year by working out with NBA trainers and playing against guys like Zach, Raef, and Jamaal in practice. Yes, he had a good year at Texas but virtually every top 10 pick from every draft has come off of a good year -- historically rookies, particularly big rookies, take some time to adjust and while I always take the "experts" with more than a grain of salt, it does sound to me like LA is less NBA ready than guys like Bogut or even Tyrus Thomas might be.

To be clear, I'm not trying to argue you into agreement so much as offer what I think is a more optimistic view of the situation. After the last few years with this team, I know I often enough benefit from optimism on this board I couldn't have generated on my own.
