Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves
Quote:
7. Trail Blazers acquire Jamaal Magloire
All-Star centers do not become available for trade very often in the NBA. That explains why the Blazers traded Steve Blake, Brian Skinner and Ha Seung-Jin to Milwaukee for Jamaal Magloire.
Magloire made the All-Star team for the Hornets during the 2003-04 season. However, several factors make this move questionable.
Magloire's numbers have declined since his breakout season. Portland also just made a long-term commitment to center Joel Przybilla, signing him to a five-year, $32 million contract. And the Blazers have big men Zach Randolph and LaMarcus Aldridge on their roster.
On the plus side, Magloire does have an expiring contract. If Portland manages to move him for another piece that will help this team rebuild, the Blazers will move off this list.

I don't see how the Magloire deal is disappointing, there was no money given to Magloire as there were in the other 6 examples. The Blazers just traded 3 mediocre talents for one superior talent. All the contracts were expiring. Writer's probably just a pissed Bucks fan.

Gosh, that is so stupid its ridiculous.... IMHO at least.
It was a steal for the Blazers. Even with Blake in the deal.

What does having Z-Bo and Aldridge matter? They won't be playing center. Someone from ESPN was reachin on this one.

ESPN's Antonio Williams wrote this... he is dead wrong about #7 IMO.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves
Go figure, haven't even heard of this guy. He totally contradicited himself saying that good-decent centers aren't avaliable very often, and how we got him cheap, and then says it was a bad move?
We traded small for big, something that rarely happens unless it involves stars.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves
Hmm, maybe it just seems confusing hearing it out of context, but I don't really understand how those moves are "disappointing". NY is way over the cap and tax threshold already, and they didn't greatly overpay for Jeffries. He should be a great fit for their team. The rest of those deals (except the Blazers) also involved overpaying players, but I wouldn't call that a disappointment either. For the Blazers trade, I agree with the point that Magloire is not even close to an all-star center and is probably a bit overrated, but we basically only gave up Blake to get him, so that isn't really a disappointment. Should we have expected to get more with a package of Blake, Skinner and Ha? No way, and if anything, it's Bucks fans that should be disappointed that they couldn't turn their former all-star center into anything more valuable.

Re: Blazers make ESPN list of disappointing moves
I think the worst move of the summer was Toronto trading V for the oft injured, less talented and always smaller Ford. I wonder why that didn't make the list.

Who is this guy, Stephen A. Smith's understudy? What is it with ESPN bashing the Blazers when they make good moves. Like Stephen A.'s embarassing draft night coverage (and subsequent backpedaling at the speed of light once he found out everyone else was praising the Blazer's draft day moves), they are constantly making themselves look totally clueless when it comes to the NBA.
Seriously, the Blazers traded three role players for a starting center with an expiring contract. They were dead last in the league in rebounding last year and they went out and got one of the top 10 rebounders in league. To me, that sounds like a good move that addresses a very specific need. Last year both of our decent centers were injured for lextended periods and they went most of the season with no real viable back-up for Zach at the 4. By adding Magloire, drafting Aldridge, re-signing Joel and adding LaFrentz the 4/5 positions go from an area of weakness to an area of strength - how disappointing is that? If anything could be considered disappointing, it would be what the Buck's got in return for the guy who started all 82 games at center for them last season.

I wish they listed an email address for this bum in the story. He'd be getting lots of emails from us.
