It's something. Kind of ungrammatical.
Would still like to have Mason somehow.
Blake's still a class guy.

could it be he is thinking of coming? CSMN made to seem taht a trade might be in the works and thats why they are keeping the roster spots open.

Re: Don't know if anyone saw the update...
I can envision him in a Blazer jersey quite easily and wouldn't be surprised if he's here this time next year.

New Orleans wouldn't do that deal.

Re: Don't know if anyone saw the update...
Thinking hypothetically, let's say Portland somehow moves Miles and Dickau for Mason in a S&T at the end of the season.
Derek Anderson is now off the books, as is Miles' salary.
Would it be possible for Portland to sign Magloire and Blake, too?
I guess the question is, how much will those 3 fetch in the FA market.
I'm gonna guess that Blake gets something like 3-5 million a year for 3 years.
Mason could be had for 6-8 million a year for 3 or 4.
Does that leave them enough for Magloire? I'm not sure they could afford Magloire on top of LaFrentz, who won't likely play enough to warrent his 10+ million a year. They'll probably have to let Jamal go, right?
07-08
Jack, Blake (@4m), Rodriguez
Roy, Webster, Dixon
Mason (@8m), Outlaw, (Webster), (Roy)
Randolph, Aldridge
Przybilla, LaFrentz
That runs them up to 70.06 million, which is 2 million less than the 72.5m budget they're running now.
They're up to at least 80m if they go for Magloire. No way Allen should do that.

I'm guessing that NO doesn't want Miles. It's better for the Hornets try to sign Mason when his deal is up rather than trading him for a bad contract.

Re: Don't know if anyone saw the update...
He'll be an unrestricted FA, and all indications are he wants to come to Portland and we'll have the cap space to sign him. So I wouldn't give anything of any real value for him this season.
Instead I'd showcase Miles for a deadline trade while also giving Webster and Roy more time to develop (at least more time than they'd have with Mason on the roster).
Honestly I'd like to spend one more developmental year (I know it's blasphemy). Hopefully Jack, Roy and Webster will have come into their own, and we'll also get a decent lottery pick in what should be an extremely strong draft. Then in 2007 we can fill out our roster through free agency with Mason and possibly another vet and hopefully start another long run of playoff appearances.

Casey what's his name who took over for Marentette:

After a little respite, Jason Quick is back to the beat, coming today with a great story about Jarrett Jack and his newly constructed ankle, along with some nice blog fodder about New Jack, D-Mase and Steve Blake putting in work at the practice facility. Keeping up good relations with once (Blake) and future (Mason and Blake) players sure beats the old standard of trading away players only to have them start trash talking as soon as they make it out of the county.
In other point guard news, Sergio just got into town, bringing tidings of peace, and immediately commenced working on his game and familiarity with basketball terminology in English. Barrett reports that the Blazer's have hired a tutor for young Serg, which begs the question: Why haven't they commissioned tutors for everyone else on this team? It couldn't hurt.

I guess they've awoke from their little naps.

What cap space?
Unless Peja plays major minutes this year, I'm not sure if Mason's value falls low enough to be covered by some sort of exemption.
Even if Miles is moved for an expiring deal, the lottery pick they're likely to sign next summer will be around 4 million dollars, putting the team at around 56.6m.
They won't have his bird rights, unless they do a trade this season.
Is there something I'm missing here?

Re: Don't know if anyone saw the update...
Desmond Mason isn't even a full-time starter... he's started less than half of his career games, including 157 of 232 in the last three years.
He'll be 29 by the time the NBA season starts and is neither big (only 6'5") nor skilled (no three point shot, not a good passer, etc.)
He's a reasonable bench guy on a good team, but I don't know if he's a player that should be a target for the team.

I'm showing around 45m with DA, Magloire, and Miles off the books and 49m with a top 3 draft choice (unless I'm missing something, which is quite possible). Ideally we'd move Dixon's salary along with Miles, but even if we didn't the 2007 cap will probably be around 56m. Although given, that may not be enough if that ridiculous hitch in his shot is actually gone as rumored. As for bird rights he'll be 34 at the end of a 5 year contract, so I'm not overly concerned.

I had no idea he was that old. It seems like just yesterday he was drafted by the Sonics. And for some reason I thought they drafted him out of highschool. I was way off. Strange how the old noggin works.
That doesn't dramatically change the way I feel about Mason. But it makes a difference. In my mind He's the kind of guy that would have been a good 2/3 backup for the next 10 years. But since he'll probably only play another 5 that really changes things.
If you're in the camp that thinks Miles is a cancer and needs to be gotten rid of ASAP you'd trade Miles for Mason in a second. But if you think Miles is worth a second shot then Mason is really low return. Then again, we did get him for Jeff McInnis.
Let's say that we've traded Miles and Webster has earned the starting small, we decide not to re-sign Outlaw and we need a backup small forward. If Mason is attainable for part of the MLE I'd take him. Like if we could use the MLE to sign both him and Steve Blake I'd do it.
