Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games

Quote:
The Trail Blazers this season, for instance, plan to telecast 29 of their 41 home games. A few years ago, that may have been no big deal because the games were sold out anyway. Now, though, the team is struggling to convince people to spend big bucks on seats – while giving its own product away on TV!
The team playing in the Rose Garden is competing with the one playing on television.
I think that’s lunacy on a couple of different levels. The Blazers probably are still getting pretty decent revenue from their telecasts – but I don’t see how that could continue. And eventually, not only will they lose the revenue from the stay-at-homes who would have bought tickets, inevitably the rights fees they’re going to get from television will drop.

Although he makes a good point, I think Portland should only pull home games off the air after they show some degree of success. Doing so before would make the Blazers even more forgettable than they are now...

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
I totally disagree!
The team needs to buld interest. Getting people to watch games is part of it. If people like what they are seeing on the tube, believe me, they will come. And it helps reach out to the maybes and uncommitteds and new in towns.
Every sports team I have seen that is successful draws fans with games on TV.
Also, the idea of going to a game is not just to see the game. If that was the case, no one would go to any game! They'd just watch on TV. It is the total package: the game, the fans, the arena, giveaways, the whole experience. Showing games on TV is part of selling that package.

sams like the anti-fan sometimes cl. put less games on tv..thats a good idea.
....
if anything, MORE games on TV is a good thing. The less games on TV now (or later) WILL drive away interest. God knows thats one of the only things that keeps me remotely interested in going to games the last few years, and being interested in the team. If the game isn't on TV, I barely remember there's a game on. Even on nights where I had tickets.

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
The solution is clear:
1. Televise fewer home games early this season, because the team will suck. You don't want people to see the train wreck and get turned off. Hey, they're not coming to games right now anyway, right?
2. Televise more home games LATE this season, because the team will be gellin'. As in, "Holy cow! Where did these guys come from? We've got ourselves a TEAM!" Instant interest, I tell ya.
3. Televise fewer home games all next season - making sure to only televise games the team stands the best chance of winning. This, along with the above, will entice more people to come out and see the team live against the better opponents.
And bingo! Soon you're selling out each and every night!
At least... I think....

I think the league is going in this direction too. According to this eventually all NBA video, past and present, will be available to the user.
This will really help grow interest overseas, I think.

I think people will go see the good teams regardless. The tickets that are more difficult to move are the games against bad teams.

I think maybe now we know why Jaynes is a sportswriter and not a businessman.

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
A couple things, Not everyone can afford tickets to the games. The only way alot of people can even see them play IS on TV. To compare the NBA situation with the NFL situation is rediculous! There are only 8 home games a year for an NFL team. Most importantly I need my nightly fix of Mike Barrett. The TV broadcast in my opinion, is not keeping people from going to the game. Plus like I've said in the past, I have the NBA league pass and compared to other broadcast from across the league, the Blazers show is one of the better one's out there. I would miss such a finely produced program. The way that they cover every angle of the game, and show you the little things you might not pick up at the arena. There's nothin like sitiin in the gym, but I love watchin them on TV too!

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
Is it just me... or are we fogetting the fact they don't make much on ticket sales because of the arena deal. Blazers are probably better off television all the games... at least they get the add revenue.

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
The idea is questionable, for a variety of reasons already stated.
What irritates me, however, is knowing that if the team took this advice the local media would go berserk! It's like Jaynes is saying: "please do this so we have another excuse to beat on you!"

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
In theory he makes a good point. I'm not sure if it's at all true though. I don't generally think "Hey, I'd like to go to a Blazer game" and then think "But it's on TV instead, so I'm not gonna go."
Maybe I'm not a typical sports fan but when I go to a game I know I'm going pretty far in advance. And when I know I'm going to a game I don't know if it's on TV or not.
The one thing too many home TV games might affect is season ticket sales. It's entirely possible that someone might know what games are going to be televised and think "Season tickets would only let me see 12 more games?" and not get them.
But someone that thinks that way would probably just get NBA League Pass so they can watch every game from the comfort of their own home. And then it doesn't matter which games the Blazers decide to televise.
The one piece of information I'd like to see is what the ratio of home to road games is.
Idealy you'd want to televise all of your road games. That way your fans have a chance to see all of your games either by TV or by going to the game.
If we're televising 29 home games and not nearly that amount of away games seems like a bad decision.

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
No way should they black out games this year. This season, exposure for the youngsters must take priority over attendance. Let the fans get to know the kids on TV, and they'll be more likely to come out to games later. Right now, alienating a hesitant fan base is asking for serious trouble.

Re: Jaynes: Blazers should televise less home games
My understanding is there are some fairly cheap seats and 2 for 1 deals, so only the most impoverished can never see a game. Obviously some people can afford to see fewer. But those people are more likely to spend what they have on a game if they see the product.

They should really only televise the games that they win.
