1) Getting a phone call from Bucky Buckwalter.
2) Seeing the Blazers draft board on the news the day before the draft!
No way would that happen these days. I was excited because I recorded
it, so I could go back and write down their pick order!
3) Jerome Kersey jam during the Utah playoffs. Kersey caught the ball
on the right baseline, drove unimpeded toward the basket. But, Mark Eaton
was coming, and would have gotten there on time except, Jerome
WENT HORIZONTAL! That's right, he leapt forward like superman taking
off (can you tell he was my favorite player back then). With his hands on
the rim, his hip landed on Mark Eaton's shoulder, and he "laid" there for a
moment while Mark let him down. Priceless dunk. Never seen anything like
it before, or since. No big mystery Clyde called him "Jerome Crazy."
4) Seeing Clyde at a Safeway autograph session. I had my infant son
(whose 16 now!), so I couldn't sucessfully stand in the 2 hour line, so
I watched for a while. I was the only one with a jersey on, #25. After
some time, Clyde looks up and says to everyone "Hey, it's Jerome" and
gives me a wave. The acknowledgment was nice.
5) Listening to the radio about people's favorite Blazer stories. Lady with
her young son are at a grocery store. The kid really wants to meet a Blazer.
So, she and her son introduce themselves to Clyde, who is very gracious.
Clyde asks the kid "Do you know which Blazer I am?" After thinking a bit,
the kid says "Danny Ainge." Clyde bursts out laughing and says that's he's
been called a lot of things, but never that
Of course, there are many others such as getting the "Bust-a-Bucket" tape
and watching Clyde's slam dunk video, Teddy's Jamz 2. But overall, what I
enjoyed the most was the love affair that the city had with the team, and
the team had with the city. We didn't win a championship, but they were
still awfully good times.
