SLAM's Hypothetical: Randolph & Miles for Webber
http://slamonline.com/online/2006/09...e-double-team/
Quote:
I just want you to think about this for a minute: Zach Randolph and Darius Miles for Chris Webber. The Blazers eat a large percentage of the outgoing salaries.
Webber’s deal is expiring at the end of the season while Randolph and D Miles have 4 and 3 years remaining, respectively. Considering the guys that Philly would be importing, the trade wouldn’t be fair straight up because the Sixers would be saddled with excess financial and emotional baggage. That said, the teams would have to come with some sort of agreement. For the sake of this discussion, let’s say the Blazers still pick up 60-65% of the contracts after Webber’s deal expires.
|
I wouldn't do this if Portland was picking up part of the Miles/Randolph contracts, nor would I do it if there were no strings attached.
It's another simplification of the supposed 'cancerous' personalities that Miles and Randolph have. It just doesn't make sense to sell these guys so low. They're both young and have enough in the tank for a half-season/full-season of decent basketball. After which you can trade them individually for pieces that will actually help instead of spending 27 million over the next 3 years for guys who don't play for the team anymore.
Stupid...

Re: SLAM's Hypothetical: Randolph & Miles for Webber
What world is that writer living in where a team can "pick up" part of a salary from a player when they trade them?
That's possible in Major League Baseball, but not the NBA. $3m can be shipped, but that's a different matter entirely.
I agree that giving away both of them for cap relief would be a bad move.

Re: SLAM's Hypothetical: Randolph & Miles for Webber
I disagree...I would deal both Miles and Zach for Webber in a second...a chance to shed 5 years of Zach and 4 years of Miles for 2 years of Webber? Absolutley....
Webber allows Aldridge to work his way into the rotation and offers either a large salary to dump (and potentially get under the salary cap) in 2 years or a very enticing piece to a team that wants to do the same such thing...
With Magliore\Aldridge\LaFrentz\Roy....I am not convinced that POR would be worse off for losing either Zach or Miles and that is even if Webber never or barely plays for POR when he is here....
Zach is a ticking time bomb...If I were POR mgmt I would be actively trying to trade him...and Miles has the talent but his apparent lack of motivation and caustic attitude are...IMO...a detriment to this team...POR is better off w\o both of them...and the sooner the better....

Re: SLAM's Hypothetical: Randolph & Miles for Webber
This whole salary-payback scheme is obviously impossible under the CBA, but I'd deal XXX-Bo, Miles, and $3M for Webber, mainly just to clear out capspace for the next five years or however long those guys are under contract.
Would Philly really do this, though?

Re: SLAM's Hypothetical: Randolph & Miles for Webber
hells yeah i would take webber for miles and zbo. philly's window of winning is closing and this would help them right away. of course philly would be ****ed in the *** for a while with their long term contracts (miles, zbo, korver, hunter, iverson, and soon iguodala).
but good luck reuniting cheeks and the two.

Re: SLAM's Hypothetical: Randolph & Miles for Webber
I wouldn't do this. Randolph is a future (maybe this season) all star. I would keep him.
Miles has actually given decent production for his salary- he's not an all star by any means, but for the 7/8 million that he gets, he's not too bad. In the past, he's been our 2nd most talented player. With Roy, Aldridge and Big Cat here, that is probably no longer true as a couple of these guys will end up being better.
Still, the only way I do this trade is if Zach is being prosecuted for beating up Canzano or something silly like that.

I sure hope Portlands days of taking over paid, old, worn out players off of other teams hands is done.

Re: SLAM's Hypothetical: Randolph & Miles for Webber
On one hand I kind of like the idea. If Miles and Randolph were gone there would be nobody on the team that could be labeled as jailblazers. Not that anything they've done has been all that bad. But I do think it's an unneeded distraction and maybe we'd be better off in the long run without distractions of that type.
And we would be clearing nearly 25 mil worth of salary for the 2008 off season. If we don't resign any of the guys that will be free agents (Magloire, Dixon, Outlaw) and the only salary we add is draft picks we should be at about 40 mil. That means we'd have enough cap space to sign someone to a max contract.
But it all really comes down to 1 question for me. Would we be able to sign someone that's better than Zach Randolph?
