Roy Article (PDX Trib)
From: PDX Tribune
Quote:
“The slashing (Brandon) Roy was outrageous. The crowd basically handing him the Rookie of the Year trophy after an exceptional first half.”
— Tom Kertes, writing for the New York Knicks’ Web site, on the Entertainers’ Basketball Classic at Rucker Park this summer
“It goes beyond numbers. Roy has a vibe, a poise and an aura that screams star … both Roy and (Randy) Foye will be terrific pros, but Roy is a cut above. Simple as that. … he will probably win Rookie of the Year this year … and go down as the signature player from this draft.”
—NBA TV’s Rick Kamla, from Las Vegas Summer League
Such accolades may not be easy to live up to, considering the opening of the Trail Blazers’ training camp is still a week away and he hasn’t yet stepped onto a court as an NBA player. But Brandon Roy isn’t getting bogged down by others’ expectations.
“I’m getting excited for it all to start, but I know I’m a rookie who still has a lot to learn,” the former University of Washington All-American says. “I’m not going to worry about what anybody is saying about me.”
Well, except for Nate McMillan, Portland’s second-year coach, who hints that Roy’s versatility may play into a bench role early this season.
“It’s too early to say he definitely won’t start,” McMillan says. “There are a lot of positions open going into camp. What you try to do is see what combinations work well together.....

Re: Roy Article (PDX Trib)
“I love Portland,” he says. “Being from Seattle, I’ve always heard a lot about the city. I’ve played in AAU tournaments here since I was a little kid, and I played against Oregon and Oregon State in college. It’s great to be on this side for a change. I think I’m going to like it here just fine.”
He definately has a future in politics after his basketball career is over.

As a Duck, I tend to lay off once the player graduates and moves on. My absolute hatred toward Casey Jacobsen has greatly subsided and is now purely a neutrality. Same goes with Nate Robinson who I actually like now.

Once I saw Casey Jacobsens girlfriend, I forgot what state I was in, let alone that I had reason to hate him.

Re: Roy Article (PDX Trib)
Being born and raised in Portland I've always had a deep down hatred for UW's football team. But I'm only a first generation Oregonian so I haven't grown to hate their other sports programs yet.
Being a die hard basketball fan I can't help but love anything good basketball related within 300 miles. I've even been known to cheer for the Sonics when they're not playing against us.
I would be perfectly happy with UW becoming a dominant basketball program as long as their football team continues to suck forever.

I'm a Cougar, so I'm in the anti-Husky camp, but this was a nice article. Brandon Roy will emerge as the face of the franchise before long.

Hey, I went to Stanford and even had class with the guy, and I HATE Casey Jacobsen. That guy was the beginning of the end of our program... So Duck fans, hate away! (But step off Mark Madsen )

Re: Roy Article (PDX Trib)
I was born into a family that hates everything Husky. But, as nice of a guy as Roy is and as good of a ball player he is, its really hard not to like him.

I'm from (non native american) Oregon stock from the time before we were a state (at least on my moms mothers side. my grandfather is canadian, and my other grandparents lived in Spokane, and weren't born there). There's a county named after one of my relatives (and I'm directly related to him, albeit generations down the line)...so I look at it this way.
Washington used to be Oregon. so they can try to act better than us, but they're still our sloppy seconds.
booyah!

Re: Roy Article (PDX Trib)
Stepping Razon went to Stanford??? I went to Cal!!!!
But I have to admit having a bit of a crush on Tara VanderVeer. Shameful for a Cal person, I know.
After Cal I went to University of Washington.
Man, I'm going to be popular here
