Greg Anthony for GM?
He said he was going to call Paul Allen... during halftime of the Mavs/Kings game. And then on SportsCenter they posed a question to Greg.... someday, you will be a GM in the NBA... what would you do?
OK, thoughts about Greg Anthony???

Smart guy. An interesting lean politically.
IMO a bit too young/inexperienced to step from ESPN into a GM position. He should do some scouting, assistant GMing or even coaching before having a job like that.

he has potential. ive been thinking for a while that he could be a good coach someday but to do that he would have to be an assistant coach for awhile so being a gm now is a bit premature.

Agreed... no doubt. Get some experience.
With some experience, he would probably be an outstanding GM.

I always admired him as a player while he was here. He was a pretty great backup until he got hurt. He never seemed to recover from those ankle? spurs.... he had a sweet shot too.
Seems he has a good basketball mind. I just do not know if its as good as some of those others...

He is a political guy, that is for sure. He was the President of the Young Republicans at UNLV...

I wouldn't hire him until he gets some experience under his belt. He knows basketball, but I think he should stay w/ ESPN for now.

I threw his name out as a possible candidate a week ago. He was very involved with the Young Republicans while he was at Univ. of Portland as well as at UNLV. I'll never forget the moxie he showed playing there (UNLV) with his jaw wired shut. I think that him being a longtime quality role player rather then a superstar, may well be better preparation for becoming a GM then being a former superstar. Along with his ESPN duties (where I think he projects very well), I'm aware that he councels former players on finances. On one of his halftime shows he beemed that the fund that he manages on behalf of some former players through the Players Association has done very well.
While I agree with Ed that it would be nice if he had a scouting background on top of his other qualifications, current exec of the year, Pistons GM Joe Dumars, has succeeded without going that route. Since Portland is reported to have a extensive scouting department already in place (that probably deserves a portion of the credit that Bob recieved for his draft picks), maybe it's more important that they have the right guy fronting the franchise as well as making the finacial decisions.

FWIW, he's also a very astute investor. If I'm not mistake, got his degree from UNLV in that area. Plus, I believe, he set up a firm in NY while playing there.
A renaissance guy, no doubt!

Greg Anthony is one of the smartest guys in recent years of the NBA. He's not brilliant on the order of Bill Bradley, but he's easily in the league of Ivy-educated guys like Chris Dudley.
As has been said, Anthony aspires to a career in business and politics and could be a very strong front office guy before long. If he doesn't know all the ins and outs of the CBA yet, don't worry - he'd have it down in a matter of days if he thought that was all that stood in the way of his getting a front office position. Anthony also has been on a lot of teams, and knows plenty of people as a result.
I'd be a fan of hiring Anthony as an assistant GM, if he'd take that job. Hire Kiki (or Petrie or Cooper) for the GM job, and then bring in Greg Anthony as his business-side advisor and Drexler as his "fan relations" advisor, and you've got a great qualified team, with history with the franchise. Cha-ching!

SIlly question, but...Why must an intelligent person with a vast knowledge of the game have experience in the front office to make a good GM? Greg as a smart PG functioned as a scout every game he ever played. He has played with most of the current Blazers and knows their strengths and weeknesses. If a person is a bad GM they are a bad GM, period. Experience doesn't change that.
I'm not saying it doesn't have value, but how important is it?
