The Portland "Jayhawks"? (Aaron Miles Invited)
Heh.
From: Barrett's Blog
Quote:
Portland native Aaron Miles has received a formal invitation to join the Trail Blazers at training camp, which begins in less than a week. Miles, who starred at Portland's Jefferson High School, went on to have a very successful college career at Kansas University. He played 19 games for the Golden State Warriors last season, before being waived on January 5th.
"He's a young, improving player and we are happy to give him a chance to make our regular-season roster," says Blazers player personnel director Kevin Pritchard. "We've brought in another solid individual, and good person, and I think Aaron has the potential to stick in this league.".....
..................Miles joins fellow Kansas alum Raef LaFrentz on the Blazers roster. Pritchard, of course, led Kansas to a national championship in 1988. Another former Jayhawk, Darnell Valentine, is the team's director of player programs. Pritchard laughed at the notion that people are starting to think of his team as the Portland Jayhawks.

Re: The Portland "Jayhawks"? (Aaron Miles Invited)
I don't understand this move. Wasn't the goal to bring in an experienced guy at the PG spot to give us a veteran presence? At this point, the combined experience of the four point guards on our roster (yes, Aaron Miles is on our roster now - non-guaranteed contract) is ONE year. ONE FRICKIN' YEAR.
And the point guard is integral to Nate's style of play (a lot of pick and rolls; penetrate and dish, etc.).
For the most part, I like the moves this team has made recently, and I like the direction we're going, but this move just baffles me.

Re: The Portland "Jayhawks"? (Aaron Miles Invited)
In fairness, Miles was a 4-year college player at a big program and played 19 games with GS last year. He's no grizzled veteran, but if he plays well at camp, he might be a guy to bring in...
Doesn't hurt that he's a local either - might just be a move to get a few more fans to show up.

Guys, he's just coming in for training camp. It's not like he's joining the team.
The vet they bring in this season will probably just ride the pine anyway.

Which just means he's trying out for the team during preseason. They're not saying anything about keeping him around longer than that.

Jeez, relax dude.
And how do you get ONE year? Jack by himself has one year. This will be Dan's 5th year in the league, and he wasn't injured for all of those. And this isn't Aaron's first year- even though he only played in 19 games last year he was still on a team. At this point, the combined experience of the four point guards on our roster is FIVE AND A HALF years. FIVE AND A HALF FRICKIN' YEARS.
Plus Roy and Sergio have more experience than Telfair did, and Aaron Miles took his team to the Final Four twice.

Re: The Portland "Jayhawks"? (Aaron Miles Invited)
I don't know if A. Miles will show enough to make the team, but I'd rather take a chance on a young guy like him, who Pritchard seems to think has a good chance of developing and sticking in the league, than waste a roster spot on a crappy throw-away veteran no one else wants. We are trying to grow into a good team for the long-term, not win 2 extra games this year. Miles is a good defender and a good distributor. Definitely worth a look.
