Re: I really hope the Blazers start Webster at shooting guard.

Jack is not small or short, for a PG, his natural position. He's actually bigger than average, and definitly stronger. But I think Brandon Roy will definitly start at SG, because he has the overall defense and ball handling skills that Martell lacks right now. I think Martell will start the season backing up Miles at SF, and may perhaps unsurp him as the season goes on. Here's how I see the lineup at first.

PG- Jack/Dickau/Sergio
SG- Roy/Dixon
SF-Miles/Webster
PF- Randolph/Aldridge
C-Przbilla/Magiloore/LaFrentz

It seems LaFrentz or Magilore will probably take turns playing 20 mins a night depending on if we need shooting or rebounding.

I accept most of that as likely, except the last -- I think Magloire will be the primary back-up for both the 4 and the 5 and that it'll mostly be a three-man rotation. LaFrentz is likely to get minutes at either the 4 or the 5 either for shooting or in case of injury, and Aldridge I expect will get nearly all of his "PT" on the practice court this year. I'm pretty excited about him but most everyone's saying he needs time in the weight room before he's going to have meaningful minutes in the NBA and playing him ahead of any of the other four when he's not ready is, I think, a mistake.

And, I'm inclined to think that by next year and perhaps as soon as even just the first few months this year, Roy will be the best guard on the roster, and, as such, should perhaps be starting -- though I'll note that there are all sorts of examples of good, even championship teams that didn't necessarily start their best five players.

Regardless, I'm pretty well at the point where I'm thinking Dixon should A) still be getting at least some minutes and B) probably he really shouldn't be in the backcourt with anyone but Roy.

I’m usually in favor of starting the best player too.
Roy
Dixon
Miles
Randolph
Maglorie
That’s the best five right there.

I would rather see
Jack
Webster
Miles
Randolph
Maglorie

So it go’s against my typical outlook. The way I see it, a pure shooter would compliments the other starters. Dixon can earn minns in Websters spot, Roy can play both spots. Pigeon holing Roy will hurt him more then anything. I live in Seattle and I did not even see Roy as a draftable player until Nate Robinson left and he was able to control the ball. Because he can play PG still doesn’t mean he should be lock into that position either. Nate likes to run an offense with two guards that handle the ball so Roy is a good fit at either position.

I suppose I'm willing to concede your best five as a best five by position, though if we're really talking about the best five players on the team I'd think that it'd shift some -- at least that Pryzbilla would trump one of the guards (probably Dixon). That kind of thing is, I think, one of the ways teams get in situations where they aren't necessarily starting their best five.

And I agree with you about Roy -- I expect he'll be the best guard on the roster at either position by mid-season. Thus, maybe you just start him with the next best guard, be it Jack, Dixon, Webster, or whomever else?
