I'm surprised the news shows aren't showing their annual "Highlights" from May 18th, 1980.
I should open up my can of Ash I have (from Mt St Helens, via Spokane) and let it breath today.

I'm so glad this whitish stuff filtering down from the sky today is snow and not ash!
Wait a sec......I don't want any more snow!!!!!!!
Wake me up when it is really summer in the mountains.
....................................
Happy 14th birthday to my son, Jimmy, today.
This is the first snowy BD he's ever had. He woke up singing I'm dreaming of a white birthday......

I remember watching one of the huge steam eruptions on a clear April day while playing a round at the municipal right next to Lakeridge High. Truly amazing.
May 18th, I just remember some ash and wearing a mask. I remember everyone breathing a sigh of relief that it was mostly blowing east. I remember Yakima getting the brunt of it, man that was BRUTAL!

Hey Crazy, it's 100 already down here. Gonna be about 110 every day till about, say, October. Wanna trade summers?

I can still remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news of it exploding. Then I ran into the house to see all the tv coverage.
Its something you never forget

It's a toasty 60 here in Oregon... acutally I think its warmer today. I wouldn't want to trade our summer, its beautiful and never really gets too hot... the wet winter is what I hate.
As for Mt. Saint Helens, I wasn't alive then, but I've been to there many times and it was obviously quite the event.

I remember going outside the next day and finding the cars (and everything else) covered in a thin layer of ash... in Grants Pass. That blast had some range on it.
And hey Skelton, I've spent a summer working outdoors in Palm Desert (Desert Hot Springs, actually). Toasty.

Certainly, I remember the Big Day. Watching the Mountain from the hills of West Linn was a sight to behold - one, never-ever to be forgotten.
However, I also remember driving to Seattle the following Sunday - the 25th. Now THAT was eery. That was the day of the big plume dump. The skies darkened like it was nighttime - only, it was the middle of the afternoon!
People were putting nylons, and the like, over their air filters, just so they could drive. The ash was slick as snow to drive on. Perhaps, even slippier. Cars were pulled over all over the place. Total bizarre sights. I remember driving over the Toutle River bridge on I-5. The river looked like a scene from some space movie - the effects of the mud, trees, and ash in an upheaved state.
I was just glad I made it back to PDX OK.

Yes, winter is what makes it all worthwhile down here, but I still miss PDX year round. Gonna go home for vacation this summer. Really looking forward to it!
Felonius: Man, DHS? BRUTAL! You get all the heat, and ridiculous winds to boot! You must be a very hardy character! Man, I complain just driving around in the AC in the summers. My summer heat escapes are the beach, Big Bear, and lately, going up the Palm Springs tram and hiking in the afternoons at 9,000 ft.
It's always at least 30 degrees cooler up there, and I don't have to drive far to do it.

Weather or not......
Skelton: After the 1-1/2 inches of snow we got today, 100 degrees sounds wonderful.....but I'm sure I would change my mind later on.
Growing up in the Willlamette Valley, I got my fill of rain and never got enough snow when I was a kid. My best years were the two years we lived in Boise. Cold winters with blinding sun on a foot of snow. Hot sunny summers. Loved them. Sadly I can't tolerate the heat like I used to. But I still think Boise has the perfect climate.
ThomasG86: Rain from mid-October till the 5th of July. No thanks. You can keep Western Oregon weather.

Thanks for the reminder, ABM. I've still got a jar of ash as well. At least I had one the last I checked when I went to mom's crib a few years ago. Maybe CFFI can go down to Peck and pick it up for me!
