Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
I went to the game tonight, sat close, and share these observations:
Brandon Roy: He plays like a man. He always seemed cool, calm, and in control. VERY un-rookie-like. Seemed to be able to score whenever he wanted. The real deal. Lucky us.
Martell: His game reminds me of a glorified rec player. Now don't get me wrong, I like this kid and his shot a lot, but . . . he tends to stand around the 3 pt line waiting for a pass. If he gets off, you can see his confidence rise (like tonight), and he plays harder. But if he misses, he seems to mope. Waiting at the arc, figuratively yelling "I'm open!" is not NBA ball.
Zach: the guy has a new body and spent the whole night in the paint, often double and triple teamed. he still got 20.
Sergio: The guy looks and plays like a real point guard - lightening quick and laways looking to pass.
Jack: Reminds me a bit of Tim Hardaway.
Dickau: Seemed to spend half the night falling down or turning the ball over. No confidence in his shot. I don't know why coach played him so long.
Travis: It always seems like a nice surprise when he hits his shot.
Who the heck is Hamilton? Guy played great tonight!
Maybe the best part, aside from a great game, was that this is a team I liked watching and is easy to root for. Nice guys, played hard, skilled and tough. I will take them over Bonzi and Sheed any day.

Re: Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
I disagree a bit about Martell. I thought he was pretty active and even took the ball to the hoop a few times. Yeah he hung around outside, but he was the team's best outside presence tonight. Dickau was 1-11, Roy doesn't have the range yet, Zach is Zach, and Outlaw is too inconsistent. So for him to be outside didn't seem like a problem to me.

Yup... you want your sharp shooters on the perimeter. They can hardly spread the defense for your inside guys if they too are staying inside. The best part about tonight was that Webster not only made his usual perimeter shots, but he also took it to the hoop and made some close up shots, which is quite obvious and proven just by looking at his free throw attempts. You don't get that many if you "stand around the 3 pt line waiting for a pass."
Right now, the other teams don't care about Martell. That means he's going to be open a lot out there, so why not stand around if you don't have to run around the floor trying to get open. When the other teams catch on, then I'm sure you'll see more movement from Martell as he, and the team, have to work to get him the open shots.
Gotta take what the defense gives you, and right now, for Martell, those are wide open shots.

Re: Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
Just got home from the game, so I'll add my takes:
Brandon Roy - Didn't play great, but ended up with 19/9 and showed us the moves that makes me believe he'll be a STUD.
Webster - Nice game, will be a great third option on offense, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable counting on him to bring us 20 a night.
Jack - Very solid game from what will likely to be our most stable player. I don't see Tim Hardaway in his game, he reminds me more of Billups; solid defender, runs the offense well, can drive and finish.
Maglorie - Terrible. Drops his shoulder and always going right, straight into his defender. Very easy to take charges against. Looked foolish against Patrick O'Bryan.
Przybilla - Didn't play much, but had 3 goaltends, two of which were almost in the basket. I can't understand why he won't pull his hand away.
Rodriquez - Like last game, shows some great signs of a wonderful floor leader. Made rookie mistakes.
Hamiton - Great game. Rebounded well, hustled, awesome face to the basket game.
Zach - Clearly our #1 player. Went right once, but still forces everything left. Delays too much in making a decision against double teams.
Outlaw - Making better decisions, but I can't see him being more than a role player off the bench.
Dickau - Not impressed, his defense is suspect and wasn't scoring.
Dixon - Managed to play a nice role in the loss despite not playing the first 50 minutes.

Re: Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
If Martell can put the ball on the floor and go to the basket more often (like tonight) he is going to be a 18+ points per game guy.

Re: Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
I forgot to mention how much I hate Joe Crawford. The NBA is making a point to crack down on players/coaches questioning the refs calls, but his quick T's are out of this world. He refs so he's the center of attention, and doesn't let the game flow.
I believe there were something like 88 FT's and 73 fouls. The game was that physical and it was impossible for either team to get a feel for the game. Something needs to change!

I think it's a psychological thing. Kind of like reminding them he's still there, even if it's a goaltend. set the precident, that a shot blocker is still there regardless of whether or not they know it.

Re: Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
Dickau was 1-11 from the field. Yikes. I'll take Jack and Roy at PG.

Re: Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
I think so far this pre-season Jack has been the most impressive guy. He is going to be a very, very good player. Not a star, but the kind of PG that every team wants. Big, tall, tough and a good floor general. The only thing that scares me is his defense against faster players, but that will come in time as his growing B-Ball IQ makes up for lack of elite footspeed.

All I have to say is that Brandon Roy can penetrate to the hole better than any rookie I've seen.

I didn't go to the game, so I may be way off base...but 12 free throws in a game pretty much precludes standing at the 3 pt line ALL night. He must have done SOMETHING in the way of taking it to the rack.

Re: Notes and Views From the Rose Garden Tonight
It is fun to watch players who are passionate about playing the game, who hustle, and give extreme effort - despite not having complete skills. I like what I've seen in two pre-season games so far. I can root for this team!!!
I just hope they can put 4 qtrs together.
