The Miles Solution (?)
Wait for the poll.
John Canzano makes an interesting point about Darius Miles in a blog post today, stating that if Miles misses 41 games in a row this season, Portland only has to pay 20% of his salary this year (the rest is paid by insurance) and he doesn't count against the cap "until he returns".

These provisions stay in place until he returns to action, and if he never does, it means that the team has apparently found an attractive loophole that could give it some relief from the remaining four years and $34 million remaining on his contract.
One of the big hangups with Miles has been the team's willingness to admit it make a mistake when it ignored his knee issues, attitude, etc. and gave him a six-year, $48 million free-agent contract two years ago. The Knicks made a powerful statement about the message they want to send to the locker room by waiving Jalen Rose this week.

This begs the question:
What should Portland do about Darius Miles???

Re: The Miles Solution (?)
Money wise to PA this is the best solution. It sucks cap wise, but again sometimes you have to cut your losses.

Re: The Miles Solution (?)
According to Storytellers salary figues.... Miles is owed $34.9 mil over the next FOUR years...
NOT $50 mill....

Re: The Miles Solution (?)
I'm pretty sure he meant the luxury threshold, and not 'the cap'.

This year and next year (the two years Portland is over the cap) you can count his salary twice due to the luxury tax. 34m + 16-18m = about 50 million bucks. Yuck.

The first part is very interesting and I have to say that missing 41 games might not be the worst thing in the world. It would save money as pointed out, but also, Miles would have a fresh chance to come back next year with one more year knocked off his contract, makeing him that much more appealing to other teams. If he could then come out and play well, his trade value may rise significantly and it will not have cost the Blazers much more then a roster space.
The second part of the quote about Jalen Rose is bogus. There is little comparison because his contract was up after this year and the knicks decided to let him walk either way so they could lower their salary. So if he was not going to be traded, and he was not going to be a future component of the team, then waive him. It makes financial sense. It might also make sense in the locker room but I see no evidence that this is the reason for the axe. If that were the case, then why didn't they cut him a year earlier?

Re: The Miles Solution (?)
I have it on good accord that Miles will likely NOT play at all this season.

Interesting Question. Perhaps that allowed them the funds to pick up Tim Thomas last year. I never thought about it that way.

Re: The Miles Solution (?)
I'll be shocked if Miles is healthy enough to play this year. I believe he is going to be out too (not playing).

Luxury tax threshold for 2006/07
Soft cap is $53.15 mil
Hard cap is $65.42 mil
Portland is at $70+ mil or paying about $5 mil this year
To blame all of that on Miles is not right. It should be distributed over all of the guarenteed salaries.
In 2007/08 Portland will drop over $18 mil in salary and add about $2.5 - $3 mil in a assumed rookie salary deal (Assuming we keep a high pick). We will probably be under the tax threshhold then. Unless we add a MLE signing or bring in more slary with trades
either way.. Miles salary for 4 years is still $34.9 mil or so...

Re: The Miles Solution (?)
isn't the 70 million INCLUDING DA's salary, which doesn't count against the lux tax threshold?
