Problem is, Telfair is now in his third season and hasn't seemed to improve his game significantly in any way - and now he once again finds himself on a team with three point guards (Bassy, West and Rondo) that are all about equal in overall effectiveness (different skill sets, to be sure, but none that stands out clearly above the other). I had high hopes his rookie year when he would just blow by people like their feet were nailed to the floor. That worked for a while, but once other teams realized he didn't have a great jump shot, they just backed off a step or two to keep in front of him. Teams also found out he has trouble finishing at the basket in traffic. He had a couple decent games in the summer league and preseason and is definitely shooting the ball better so far, but he is also often outplayed by the rookie Rondo.
Even though he's playing more minutes than he ever did as a Blazer, his assist numbers are the lowest of his career, both in absolute terms and assists/40 minutes. His assist/40 numbers have never been outstanding for a starting point guard, and they've steadily declined from 6.7 to 6.0 to his current 4.0. I know the current sample size is small, but this points more and more to Telfair's inability to create for his team mates and run an offense. By comparison, Jarrett Jack is currently averaging over twice as many assists per game (6.2 vs. 2.8), and his two team mates, Rondo and West are both averaging more assists while playing fewer minutes.
Maybe, Telfair will someday develop into a decent NBA point guard, but based on what I've seen so far that day is still a long way away and by then he'll likely be on his third or fourth team.
