Yeah, that is exactly how he got it. I remember him admitting to as much in some kind of interview thingy during his second or third year. It is definately a good nickname. Big and nasty.
It is waaay better than all of those "first letter of first name combined with the first 3 or 4 letters of the last name" nicknames. I hate those. Like Reep said, much better than Z-Ran.
In fact, just to demonstrate how bad those types of nicknames are I will make up a few based on our team:

The worst I saw was on the ESPN boards when Minny fans were referring to Troy Hudson as THud. Yknow it needs to stop when someone's nickname is "thud."
