So far, here is what things look like
----------------------------------
Blazers ppg 95.0
24th best in NBA
Opponents ppg 97.1
15th best in NBA
Advantage = Opponents
---------------------------------
Blazers FG% 46.3%
10th best
Opponents FG 47.43%
23rd best
Advantage = Opponents
--------------------------------
Blazers 3pt% 30%
25th best
Opponents 3pt 33%
10th best
Advantage = Opponents
--------------------------------
Blazers FT% 78.71%
7th best
No opponent comparison available, but this looks to be an area of strength.
-------------------------------
Blazers Offensive Rebounds 10.8
17th best
Opponents off reb 12.3
20 best
Advantage = opponents
-------------------------------
Blazers Defensive reb 26.7
28th best
Opponents def reb 26.2
4th best
Advantage = Blazers by a hair. This is a very odd statistic. We are one of the worst teams in the NBA at getting D rebs but seem to be excellent at stopping our opponents from getting theirs. However we don't have a high total reb or offensive reb so this statistic seems weird to me. I am not sure why this is happening.
-------------------------------
Blazer Total Reb 38.7
23rd best
Opponents total reb 37.6
7th best
Advantage = Blazers
------------------------------
Blazers assists 15.6
29th best
Opponents assists 20.9
18th best
Advantage = Opponents big time
------------------------------
Blazers Steals 7.0
15th best
Opponents steals 6.6
11th best
Advantage = slightly Blazers
-----------------------------
Blazers Blocks 4.6
17th best
Opponents blocks 4.6
14th best
Advantage = no advantage
----------------------------
Blazers Turnovers 15
11th best
Opponents turnovers 14.4
23rd best
Advantage = slightly opponents
----------------------------
Blazers Assist/turnover ratio 1.04
26th best
No opponents statistics available.
----------------------------
What do you learn from these statistics?
|
You learn that if one team has a real good game against the Blazers that it effects the yearly statistics. For instance, say a team beats Portland by 20 and we have only played 5 games. Well that adds 4 points to the differential for the season. It has no bearing on the other games.

JJ is playing well enough to start on a playoff team.
Ditto for Roy, when healthy.
Randolph is having an MVP season.
With LA, Joel, Mags, and Raef, we are very deep at the 4-5
With Udoka, yes, Udoka is the glue player we've missed.
Yes, when healthy, this is a borderline playoff team. I'm not
saying we WILL make the playoffs, but, yes we are a playoff
threat. The big problems I see are
1) We give up too many easy baskets
2) We spot the other teams 10-16 points at the beginning of each game.
Both of these are fixable.

minus Darius Miles +some cap space

minus Jamaal Magliore +3 years of experience for JJ, Roy, and LA

Jack and Roy are still too young. They are going to be....dare I say....a great backcourt someday. Just not yet.
Zach is an all world offensive scorer, but still has a little trouble passing out of double teams...Although he's lightyears ahead of where he was last year.
Joel, Mags and raef are worthless as starters, and LaMarcus isn't ready to be a starting center for a playoff team. Joel is a great guy to have coming off the bench though.
Udoka is our starting SF.....That right there screams non playoff team.
Travis and Martell are still too inconsistant...again it's a youth thing.
I think we are still a realistic year away from contending for a playoff spot. Do I think we are better than last year.....Hell yes I do. We're just sort of like the old SNL cast......Not Ready For Prime Time Performers.

Sorry MM, but I'm going to have to put you on the couch:
I know you've been hurt, emotionally, for a long time. Rooting for a team that perenially
went to the playoffs, played with dignity and class, and made a heck of a lot of dunks was
awesome, before things went woefully wrong.
Off-court incidents piled up and we became known as the "Jail Blazers," mostly because
it slipped off the tongue so easily. An off-the-court disgrace, an on-the-court failure,
the Blazers made us promises. I know you're hurt. You see, I was there with you, the
whole time. You don't want to commit. You don't want to get your hopes up too
soon. I understand. But, we've got something we haven't had before. We've gotten
two top lottery picks. By all accounts, we got the best player in the draft, and the best
big man in the draft. Are they "ready for prime time?" Definitely not. But barely making
or missing the playoffs is not prime time. They are ready for this, once they are healthy.
With one more quality piece and 2-3 years experience, then we'll be ready for prime time.
You may need a little more time to heal. But, some of us are ready now. Ready for
what? To dance, to sing, to learn how to yell "Rip City" in different languages
The time for "realism" is over, it's the time for unbridled, maybe even foolish, optimism
Go Blazers
p.s. This actually was supposed to be funny, but I fear it comes off as condescending.
Please do not take it that way.

Re: Blazers should be losing (Statistics)
Admittedly, I have not read this thread. It looks like someone has put a lot of work into it.
I don't get all the "we should be" threads. Portland is what it is.....
As my friend Jim Rome says...scoreboard.

When I watch the games, I hope for wins every time. We've been blessed with 4 already, and that's freaking awesome.
But when they lose, on this board at least, people rip into Outlaw, Dixon, Webster... hell, there's even been a 'JJ disappointment thread'. When this happens, Portland goes from being a projected playoff contender to a team in need of another overhaul. Webster turns into the biggest bust of all time, Outlaw turns into an absent-minded disappearing act. You get the picture.
Being realistic doesn't mean we can't enjoy and celebrate every success the team has this year. It just means we take it a game at a time. When they win, they'll look like a sure-fire contender, and when they lose, sometimes, they'll look like a lottery team. That's just how it goes with young, extremely talented teams.

Here's the way I look at it, and it's probably pessimistic.
During each summer, we get away from
the reality of the season and its results. We/I strounge the draft boards, maybe even make a mock
draft. Maybe a new draft pick will infuse the team with life/hope. It's a time to get excited about
the team, even when the draft pick isn't very high. Fans, especially those of poor teams, really get excited
during the off-season. There is a large disconnect with reality, but that's OK because the season
will eventually start and "Reality will Hit."
I'm hopeful, but paranoid. I really think if everything goes right, we can fight for a playoff spot
this year. However, I understand that it is also very possible we completely scrub out. At 4-3
what we've been granted with is an extended off-seaon, the time for blind optimism has
been increased into the regular season.
I am going to dance, celebrate, yell "Rip City" while our +.500 record stands, because I may not
be able to do it later.
Go Blazers
