The obligatory Brandon Roy update: He's out for awhile, but the decision on surgery to shave his talus bone won't be made for two weeks. Roy will be in a walking boot for that time and when he comes back, attempt to play with an orthotic insert in his shoe. If he continues to feel pain surgery will probably be the only way to go. If he doesn't feel pain that may just postpone the surgery until after the season or the pain comes back, whichever comes first.
Then they should just do the stinking surgery in the first place. All this ***** footing around isn't going to solve anything, and the recovery time for the surgery is so short. Sheesh.

I agree whole-heartedly. And apparently plenty others here think so, too:

Doctors have guidelines and proper proceedures they have to follow to keep from getting their pants sued off. They can't just grab the knife and start carving on a person. Rest might work for Brandon, they have to try that first.

Details, details. I know my doctor would make me do every stupid rehab he could think of before recommending surgery, but I'm on an HMO. (My wife had an HMO doctor who nearly crippled her for life taking that approach when she had an obvious spinal injury that required surgery. She now has a different doctor.)

Re: New Jason Fleming piece...

Positives to Brandon Roy being out:

- Jarrett Jack gets an opportunity to really take ownership of this team. He never had it last season, and Roy was eating into his touches a bit early on (not that it was a bad thing... it just happened). When Roy comes back, hopefully some of the ballhandling hiccups will be gone and Jack will be more self-assured as a leader.

- More shots for Martell. It's been an inconsistent start for Martell Webster, and with Brandon Roy out Webster gets minutes at his natural position. He hasn't yet seized control of the game like he did in the preseason during moments, but he might in the next couple of weeks.

- Juan Dixon: Call it a showcase, call it whatever you want, the guy is stepping up to the plate like he did last year and showing Nate how important he is to the team. Through 7 games, Dixon is averaging about 11 points per game on 43% shooting.

Conclusion: A surgery decision won't affect a Portland playoff run, nor will it change the fact that Brandon Roy is a very good basketball player. Who knows, if the boot works, we get Roy back even sooner.
