Miles' Trade Status
Now that Darius has missed 41 consecutive games, Canzano says that insurance picks up 80 percent of his salary. Assuming Little John is right on this one (I know, that's asking a lot), wouldn't you think this would enhance the Blazers' ability to trade him? Up until now, nobody would take him because of his injury status, but with insurance picking up 80% of the tab, he now becomes almost like partial salary relief, especially if the Blazers throw some cash into the deal. Okay, maybe he's not exactly going to be in high demand, but packaged with other pieces, it would seem to me that the odds of ending his association with the Blazers is improved.

Re: Miles' Trade Status
Does it work that way? I would guess the Blazers pay the full salary and get reimbursed by the insurance. The insurance payment is a year by year thing. So, Miles could be "able" to play next year, require payment of his full salary (without insurance help) and not really be able to contribute anything (other than causing distractions at practice).
My hope is that he just cannot ever recover to game shape and the insurance will kick in every year and we never have to see his face in the NBA again. The only way he is tradeable from this point forward is if he has an Amare-like recovery and finds motivation to reach his potential. Unlikely.

Re: Miles' Trade Status
Yea I was under the same impression as Reef, that at the beginning of next year Portland starts paying his full salary again until the 41st game (same as this season). Larry Coon might have insight into this.

Re: Miles' Trade Status
Nobody wanted Miles when we took him.
We gave him a huge raise.
He hasn't done squat since, nor has he improved his attitude.
I'd be surprised to ever see him play again anywhere.

Re: Miles' Trade Status
I doubt the insurance savings is tradable.
As far as I can tell, here are the possible things that might happen with Miles.
1) Miles comes back next year and plays well enough for the Blazers to trade him. (least likely)
2) Miles comes back next year and plays poorly. He remains on the bench and is not traded till he has an expiring contract.
3) Miles can't come back and takes his money and leaves. The Blazers get an exemption.
He is not going to be traded away as is. Everyone wants the Blazers to try and trade him but the only way he is traded is in combination with a young great low salaried player. For example Roy + Miles could be traded. But the Blazers would take back somethign far worse then Roy. The best thing at this point in time is to keep Miles and hope for the best. In a short two more years he will have an expiring contract and I expect that to be the first time he is truely tradable.

Re: Miles' Trade Status
Miles is not tradeable. Insurance only pays his salary for games 42-82 each season. No other team wants his contract or his attitude. He hasn't demonstrated that he can play for a long time now. He'll have to do that before there is ANY chance at trading his sorry butt outta town.
Our best hope (and prayers) is that he matures, finds new motivation, health and plays his way back into the starting lineup.
Otherwise - can you say "Dead-weight"??

That's like saying Hitler would have been a good leader if he somehow became more compassionate.
Any scenario that has Miles returning to the line-up is our worst nightmare, not our best hope.
He's a team-killer, plain and simple.
Our best hope involves a runaway Tri-Met bus.

Re: Miles' Trade Status
While D-Miles doesn't have the "go-getter" attitude that many (including me) would like to see, you can't say he's a worthless player. Did you all forget that through the first half of last season, he was doing pretty well? If I recall correctly, up until he got hurt in like december or january, he was averaging around 18 PPG. His jumper was far better than it had been earlier in his career, and his athletic ability made him one of our few players that could actually run the fast break.
Talk about attitude all you want, but there's plenty of players in the league that aren't the most enthusiastic people. It doesn't mean they don't contribute.
Personally, I wish we had a healthy Miles playing for us right now.

I have mixed feelings about this. At first I didn't want him no matter what, but when I found out he had been playing hurt that did change my feelings a little. What we took as him just coasting during games could have actually been him trying to play while hurt without complaining about it or using it as a excuse. He did do well during the first part of the season so if he came back healthy and wasn't a distraction he could help us.

Anybody have a source for this assertion? It may well be correct, but I haven't seen that in writing anywhere.

Re: Miles' Trade Status
Insurance is on his contract, and therefore would go with him if traded.

Please don't get us started by defending Miles publicly. He hasn't been the player we wanted since writing him name on that new contract.
