Yep, if "we" had made those two shots Whitsitt wouldn't have felt the uncontrollable urge to destroy a team that was two made shots away from a championship (and possibly more than one). Instead, he ripped that team apart. Up until that fateful fourth quarter, Whitsitt was doing great. He'd built a championship caliber team. Too bad he immediately turned around and destroyed it.
Still, even with the post 4th quarter destruction of the franchise, Whitsitt hardly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Isiah Thomas. Thomas is the Babe Ruth of bad GMs. He's totally revolutionized the art of spending the most and getting the least in return. At least when Whitsitt was spending Paul Allen's money at a record pace the team was a contender. The Knicks had a $140 payroll last year, won 23 games and failed to make the play-offs in the weakest division in the history of the NBA (at the time, the Atlantic may be even weaker this year - hard to believe, but quite possibly true).
