No I think the reality is, Portland doesn't get an all star again this year, and the fact is, we really don't have any.

I'm not saying that he'll get in, just that he has a shot.
I think the odds are against him, since there's really one spot up for grabs, but I don't think he's out of it.
Quick look at the competition...
Zach Randolph: 24pt, 10reb (17W-25L)
Carlos Boozer: 22pt, 12reb (28W-14L)
Shawn Marion: 19pt, 10reb, 2st, 1.5bk (32W-8L)
Lamar Odom: 18pt, 9reb, 21GP (27W-15L)
Josh Howard: 20pt, 5reb, 1.2st, 1bk (34W-8L)
Elton Brand: 21pt, 10reb, 1st, 2bk (19W-21L)
Rashard Lewis: 22pt, 7reb, 1.3st 27GP (16W-25L)
Looking at the data, I'd say that Marion and Howard are the strongest candidates for that last spot. And I agree with you that Howard probably wins since he's putting up big numbers on the best team.
For Zach to have a legitimate shot, the "short memory" factor would have to apply with a little Blazers win streak and a string of 30+pt games from Zach.

Let's say we do this:
Brown, Nocioni, and a #11 pick (New York's) for Randolph.
I think this trade would work, but if it goes down, we have to start thinking about thinning the roster (and we'd need to immediately deal Magloire).
Because this is what you'd end up with next season.
Jack, Sergio, Dickau
Roy, Webster, (Udoka), Dixon
Nocioni, Udoka, (Webster), (Outlaw), Miles,
Aldridge, Outlaw
Przybilla, LaFrentz (Aldridge)
1. Roy
2. Aldridge
3. Nocioni
4. Jack
5. Przybilla
6. Sergio
7. Webster
8. Outlaw
9. Udoka
10. #8ish
11. #11ish
12. LaFrentz
--
13. Dixon
14. Dickau
15. Freeland
16. Miles
xx. 2nd round pick
xx. 2nd round pick
That barely works. If you threw in the availability of Darius Miles it'd get even worse. Dixon, Dickau, and either Miles or Outlaw would need to be moved.

Re: Possible Zach destinations
I'd rather see a POR\CHI deal like
PJ Brown, Ben gordon, NY Pick and filler (if necessary)
for Zach
I don't think CHI is dealing Deng....Prior to the season I think they might have thought about it, but after his play this year...no way...

Where does Gordon fit in? Roy moves to SF? We already have a few of those still coming up through the system.

Most people will say nay nay to that, but that is a decent deal for Zach.

Why would Philly do that? They're in rebuilding mode, which means accumulate draft picks and plug in the puzzle pieces, see what works.

It would show that he is worth his contract or close...

Unfortunately, the All-Star game is nothing more than a popularity contest - even the coaches' picks. And Zach just isn't popular across the NBA fan-base. Heck, he isn't even all that popular among Blazers fans.
Our best shot at All-Star weekend representation is w/ Roy, Aldridge, Sergio, and Jack playing in the Rookie / Soph game. Maybe Webster, too (long-shot, IMO).

I disagree about the coaches picks.
But I could be persuaded if you had some good examples of popular players being selected as AS reserves over more deserving players.
I can't remember any definite instances though...

Well i think that works out for both teams,
philly are not that far away from having a decent starting 5,philly are giving up 2 low 1st rounders but zach is a proven commodity and fits well in the half court system that andre miller and mo cheeks prefer, they still will end up with a top 8 pick in the draft and your 2nd rounder.
portland would obviously like to take part in the oden sweepstakes so getting rid of zach can only help there cause(and philly re: your 2nd rd pick).Joe Smith would actually fill thehole that zach leaves for the rest of the season, korver is the perfect!! spot up shooter to recieve sergio`s passes if the fastbreak breaks down and the 2 1st rounders give u manouvreability to trade up or just continue the youth movement into 2008.
Simply, zach is a quality PF and you cant get them cheaply,in the eastern conference he`d be one of the best PF there is,might seem like philly giving up a lot but a proven player over 2 possibilitys imo is a better deal

I hate to burst your bubble, but Joe Smith was part of the Iverson trade, therefore he can't be dealt again this year.
I also suggest a trade of Zach Randolph and Juan Dixon to Washington for Antawn Jamison plus their first rounder. The Wiz get a dominant post player to compliment Arenas, and we get cap relief after next year, as well as another mid-range pick.
