Re: OT: Aren't you glad we didn't get this guy...
with that kinda attitude 'just want the money, ill just do whatever when im competing' how is that going to add to the dunk contest when he's so half-assed about it?!?! stern should have cut him off right there and got a replacement - imo its bringing the good spirit of the weekend into one only about $ and it hurts the NBA image.

Me too. I was afraid he'd fall to us at #4 on draft day. I'm always leary of a guy who has a great NCAA tourney and shoots from obscurity to "Potential Lottery Pick". It wasn't even a great tourny (if I remember correctly), just an unbelievable game vs Duke and JJ Red. I will see that he is already a much better shooter than Swift ever was.

Re: OT: Aren't you glad we didn't get this guy...
I think I had Thomas third on my draft board (not a prediction of order, but just who will be the better player).
IIRC, I think I had it Aldridge, Gay, Thomas, Roy, Foye, Bargnani, Shelden Williams, Morrison. Yes, some of them seem screwy now ... but I bet if others look up their picks we'd see some screwball predictions from just about everyone. In my defense, while I thought Thomas would eventually be a better player than Roy, I did think Roy would be by far a better fit for the Blazers in the near term. It's been surprising how much better he and Aldridge have looked than any of those other guys in the top 10. I also got some flack for picking Morrison so low, but looking at it now I don't think that was wrong at all.
In any case, the Blazers had nearly a perfect draft. Even in hindsight, could they have possibly done it any better? The only way I see how is if they had taken Craig Smith, Alex Johnson, Daniel Gibson or ideally Paul Millsap at #30 instead of Freeland. But Freeland still has a chance to prove that pick right, and even if that doesn't happen, making three seemingly ideal first round picks, where you wouldn't change any of them even after seeing the guys play half an NBA season, is a rare feat.

Re: OT: Aren't you glad we didn't get this guy...
I think the Bulls have over-reacted, though it would've helped his case if he'd gone on to say something like, "What's important to me isn't individual achievement but how our team does. Really, I'd just as soon not run the risk of injury, save that it'd be nice to get paid that much for 20 minutes of work. Regardless, I'm looking forward to finishing All-Star weekend and getting back to games that matter."
So, he didn't say that and I suppose we shouldn't give him credit for potentially thinking that. Still, it seems like not that big a deal to me.
On the other hand, some pretty cool things happen when guys do actually prepare. I loved Amare's dunk a few years ago when he threw the ball off the backboard from near the half-court side lines to have Steve Nash head butt it back to him for the dunk. And if I recall, that somehow didn't even win the competition!

The league is looking to replace him in the dunk contest.

They should put in Gay. IMO he has more athleticism and creativity than Thomas.

Re: OT: Aren't you glad we didn't get this guy...
Here's John Paxon's statement about it:
Quote:
|
"This fine is an appropriate response to the remarks Tyrus made concerning his participation in the slam dunk contest," Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson said in a statement. "It is a poor reflection on Tyrus individually and a poor reflection on the Bulls organization, and I am certainly disappointed."
|
Afterwards his agent issued a statement after Thomas being fined:
Quote:
|
"I truly feel honored to be invited to participate in this year's slam dunk contest during next week's NBA All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas," Thomas said. "The opportunity to represent the Bulls and the city of Chicago on a global stage is a privilege that I do not take lightly. I regret the extent to which my comments indicate otherwise."

Re: OT: Aren't you glad we didn't get this guy...
Too bad it's not a lay up contest. With Travis Outlaw's quick first step and vertical ability he could contend. And the best part is if he missed the lay up, he can try again . . .
