Jeff's Blazers Report for 6-9

http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_4034.shtml

Quote:
What I am hearing over the weekend is that Tim McNamara, the radio guy, has moved into the frontrunner’s seat for the position. (of President)
Quote:
The general manager search is quite interesting. The Blazers search has been slow because they are interested in members of both the Nets and the Spurs and cannot have serious conversations until the finals are over. ...

The General Manager search at this point plays out like this:

Leading candidates but will not get hired because of PR: Chris Wallace and Jerry Krause
Leading candidates but lack GM experience: John Hammonds and Ed Stefanski
Has not been interviewed but Blazers would love to: Ernie Grunfield in Milwaukee
After all that I still believe that Billy Knight gets the job.
Quote:
The Blazers currently maintain the 23rd pick. With the 23rd pick the Blazers will be faced with many choices. They will be looking for a point guard prospect or a power forward prospect. The Blazers will be intrigued if a player like Jarvis Hayes begins to fall or somehow Kirk Hinrich or Luke Ridinour slip to 23. For power forwards, the Blazers will look at Brian Cook of Illinois, a few of the Euros and will think about high schoolers James Lang or Kendrick Perkins.

The Blazers are also eyeing the 3rd (Denver), 4th (Toronto), and 5th (Miami) picks in the draft. These are the draft picks which are in play. The Blazers are very intrigued with Carmelo Anthony and feel that Anthony would slide right into the small forward position and that Qyntel Woods has the quickness to play a 2 guard position. Melo could be available at both the 3rd and 4th spot and with the intrigue of the big Siberian Bear Pavel Podkolzine that Denver will have at the 3rd spot and the interest the Blazers have in Pavel at the 4th spot, along with Chris Bosh from Georgia Tech, the Blazers feel that the 3rd, 4th and 5th spot will have some intriguing talent. For the Blazers to get to the 3rd spot in the draft, they will need to move Rasheed and to get to the 4th spot, moving Rasheed is also probably their only choice.
Watching Qyntel Woods play I have come to feel the Q will be best served as a '2'. He has the shooting ability and quickness to qualify. And with his height, would be a matchup problem.

Quote:
The Blazers offseason will be significantly effected by many outside factors. In the coming weeks we will be examining many possibilities. As I discussed, you must keep the following in mind:

1) The Blazers would like to move the salary down to $60-70 million
2) The Blazers feel that Qyntel Woods is 1-2 years away from being a 2 or a 3 in their offense
3) The Blazers are not convinced that Zach Randolph can be a starting 4 for the entire season
4) The Blazers will resign Pip to a 2-3 year deal at around $6-7 million per season; Arvydas will probably not be back; the Blazers want to move Boumtje to the active roster next season as a backup center
5) Dale Davis is not a free agent
6) The salary cap does exist so no trades that are absurd

Let’s start with everyone’s favorite: Kevin Garnett. The Blazers do love Garnett and have loved him since he moved from high school to the NBA draft. The Timberwolves are not going to move Garnett unless they are in a situation in which they have no other choice and they have not quite been to this point.
I want my KG TV! I want my KG TV! I want my KG TV!

Quote:
The Blazers and Pacers will discuss a trade moving Damon Stoudamire for Brad Miller and Austin Croshere. The trade will save the Pacers almost $17 million over the last two years of Croshere’s deal and get the Pacers a point guard that they have needed. However, the Pacers may decide for luxury tax reasons that they are better off in letting Brad Miller walk for nothing and look at moving Al Harrington or Jon Bender and Croshere for a point guard like Damon Stoudamire. Bottom line, don’t look for Jermaine in Portland, but look for Brad Miller as an outside possibility
I like, I like. Get rid of the mouse for a decent 7 footer. How great would that be!

Quote:
Reading between the lines should confirm your suspicion that the Blazers and Goodwin would like to work out a Stoudamire for Payton swap in some manner. The Bucks want to move out Tim Thomas and the Blazers would not mind him at the small forward position, but are not fond of his big salary and years on his deal. Last week I suggested a GP at around $8 million per year 3 years and Thomas for Ruben and Damon. That is a deal that could possibly happen.
Can't we just bring in Gary with the MLE? What do we need with a $60mil shooter? And besides, if we send the mouse to Milwaukee, we can't do the Brad Miller/Croshere deal.

Quote:
As you can see from these discussions, the Blazers are looking to move Damon, Bonzi and Rasheed this offseason and Ruben Patterson is a virtual certainty to be wearing a visitor’s uniform into the Rose Garden next season.

Did Jeff just set up this scenario?....

"With the 3rd pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets select Pavel Podkonzine. The Toronto Raptors have the next selection."

[5 minutes later]

"We have a trade to announce. The Portland Trailblazers have traded Rasheed Wallace to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and the 4th pick in this year's draft. With that 4th pick, the Portland Trailblazers select Carmelo Anthony from Syracuse University. The Miami Heat have the next selection."

I'm still not keen on getting Davis and his huge contract, but I'd at least consider this. Anthony is a HUGE upgrade over Bosh, or anyone else who'd be available at #4 if Anthony went to Denver.

Speaking of Bosh, his stock is falling faster than a statue of Saddam.....

A Qyntel Woods (@ SG) and Carmelo Anthony (@ SF) tandem 2-3 years down the road would be great IMO. Add in Zach at the PF spot, and a young PG (I like C.Thomas) and you have a very nice youthful core to build around.

I WANT Anthony!!

If Payton was willing to come for the MLE, of course. I'm not sure he's willing to go ANYWHERE for the MLE.

So, do the Blazers sign-and-trade for Payton and try to lure someone like Miller for the MLE? Or sign-and-trade for Miller and try to lure Payton for the MLE? Frankly, I think the Blazers have a better chance (not a good chance, just a better chance) of landing Miller with the MLE.

Brian Cook would be awesome in my book! To me he is very "Tim Duncan" like. I am a huge Illini fan so I have seen him play often...he'd be a great pick for PDX.

STATS

SA is looking at him too-I hear.

I'm not in love with Anthony as much as the rest of you are (I'm worried that he's going to turn out to be a bit chubby, and he's only 6'7.5"), but getting him is a heck of a lot better than Bosh if we're going to move Rasheed to make it happen.

One interesting thing about Jeff's articles: he's bound and determined to get Jon Bender in Portland. He seems to mention him every column.

A trade that works according to realGM:

Portland sends Indy: Damon
Indy sends Portland: Bender, Croshere, Tinsley

Why for Portland: Duh. Bender's a potential stud, Tinsley is a decent young player and Croshere might even fill a role as a shooter off the bench. This could conceivably make Payton more likely to come to PDX, too.

Why for Indiana: Less "duh". Damon would be an upgrade for them over Tinsley (especially since Thomas has a very good history with Damon and less of a good one with Jamaal). Croshere's contract is longer than Damon's, and he hasn't been a factor under Thomas. Bender has potential, but if he's parked behind Artest and Harrington and Reggie Miller and whomever else they have, he's not doing them a lot of good.

I like it Ed... but I like the idea of getting Miller too. I wanted him when he was in Chicago. I thought he would be a good big man who could a good role player. Much like Dale does now.

Maybe we could push for Miller in a S&T later in July. But I think you are right Croshere has to be in it for them to let us have Bender.

Could be a very interesting next few weeks.

After I keep thinking about it, the Blazers are a top 3-5 team in the NBA.Why do we have to trade Rasheed for a draft pick? He loves Portland and will resign next season. I am in love with the Damon and Patterson for Payton and Thomas deal. Tim Thomas would easily win 6th man of the year award. Just think about the energy that his shooting could bring off the bench. He would be like a mix of Uncle Cliffy and Ainge back in 90-92. Re-sign AD or not if we get Ridnour. and Pippen. Plea for Sabas to come back for one more title run, and trade Bonzi/DA...preferably Bonzi because we could get more out of him along with McInnis for a lottery pick and change and select Luke Ridnour.

PG-Gary Payton,Antonio Daniels,Luke Ridnour
SG-Derek Anderson,Qyntel Woods,Antonio Daniels
SF-Rasheed Wallace,Tim Thomas,Qyntel Woods
PF-Zach Randolph,Rasheed Wallace,#23 Draft Pick
C-Dale Davis,Arvydas Sabonis,Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje

I don't know about you.....but that team would make a deep run into the playoffs in 04. So why all this rebuild crap talk? I can see if you wanted to trade Rasheed for Toronto's pick if we got Thomas, but what we forget as Cimalee pointed out to me is that Sheed does a damn good job of playing D against hte stacked PF's out here in the West.

Think about it

That would be a dream come true. I love Carmelo.

I do not like the idea of getting Tim Thomas...

it has been said he is not a happy camper, and he grates on his team mates. Sounds a bit like McInnis... plus his game seems to have dropped a bit this year. Even after Big Dog left...

A Toronto thought...
AD + Alvin Williams + 4th pick for Sheed only
