OT: Name change?
did anyone see that GI Joes is no longer called GI Joes, but now "Joe's Sports and Auto store"?
I have to admit, having a store called "G.I. Joe's" is a little funny sounding.

Re: OT: Name change?
I skimmed the article about this last week. Joes was bought out by a cali company. They changed the name because they wanted to get away from the image of "army surplus" store. They also plan on opening up 11 new stores in the tri-county area.
Personally I like the name GI Joes . . . but more importantly, I love the store (can spend hours in there and Home Depot) and hope the new management won't **** it up.

Re: OT: Name change?
I guess this means that my stuff that I got when I worked there back in the 80's is going to become collector items now. I knew those pins and that red vest would payoff someday!
Is Norm Daniels still going to be running the show or are they going to be run by the folks in Kalifornia? I worked at the Rockwood store just out of high school and thought about going into store management. That was just before they moved into Washington. When I left they had just opened the Vancouver store. Sounds like the local company did good only to sell out to an out of state company. Hopefully they will only change the name and not the store itself.

The artice I read was in the business section of the Oregonian (I think). It was a lengthy article (relative to newspaper articles). I only read the front page of the article . . . I would do a search and attach a link . . . but I'm not good at that stuff.
Anyways, if you are interested in more info . . . there is an article out there about it.

True.

Me too. I think it is a mistake. G.I. Joe's is a quirky and interesting name with significant history behind it; Joe's is the blandest, most boring name you could possibly come up with. They might just as well have named it "Store". Actually, that would have been a little bit clever.
This move shows how little the new owners have going on upstairs. If they had a clue, changing the name would be about 10343024th on their list of priorities.

Way to make this into a political discussion when it has nothing to do with the name change. It's more about the new owners wanting to associate a name that actually has more to do with what they sell. It's no longer a surplus type store, it's a sports and auto store, so calling it GI Joe's seems a little odd.
Of course, since it's been GI Joe's for 55 years now (or whatever), most of us don't go "oh, I'm going to GI Joes, the army surplus store". Plus, I think most people just call it "Joe's" or "Schmoes" anyways.
