Lewis' agent, Tony Dutt, and the Sonics brass are supposed to begin initial discussions next week. Lewis has shared a positive relationship with general manager Rick Sund, whose status for next season is in question.
Lewis has also supported Hill, and his days with the Sonics may be numbered, so Lewis said he will take the next 2 1/2 months and assess the direction of the franchise.
"I want to put myself out there and see what other options I have," he said. "There's so much going on, where the team is going to be in Seattle or somewhere else. I want to sit down and look at everything. I want to take some time and take in what's going on with the general manager and coach and the other players."
The good news for Sonics fans is that Lewis has a special affection for Seattle. When he sat in that green room in June 1998, the Sonics were the ones who took a chance on a country boy from Houston who had overvalued his talents and paid the price for it.
He emerged from a second-round pick intimidated by the likes of Gary Payton and Hersey Hawkins and became one of the league's most versatile forwards.
"I still think about draft night. I didn't know what I was getting myself into and obviously the Sonics gave me a chance," he said. "They are the reason I am the type of player I am today, and I appreciate it. I am going to give them the opportunity (to re-sign me). They are the first team I am going to go to, see what kind of offer they give me, and I hope the offer is not insulting more than anything."
Bennett said the organization will make front-office decisions quickly and that could benefit negotiations with Lewis. He can't officially sign a contract until July 10, but other NBA teams can begin contacting Lewis on July 1
