If Oden's a bust....
We're going to have to look back and remember that we could have traded the #1 for almost anything we wanted! Reports are that we were offered Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. The only two players in the league that would probably not be offered are Tim Duncan and Lebron James.
But he cannot be a bust. Karma is paying us back for Olajuwon, Jordan, LaRu Martin, Chris Paul, Moses Malone, and Sabonis.

Re: If Oden's a bust....
If Oden is a bust no one in the league would blame us. Everyone would pick him if they were in our position. Oden just has too much hype for there to be any doubt that he is the #1 pick.

Re: If Oden's a bust....
We'll find out in a year. If other GM's offer HOF players for him I feel good about our chances that he is special. That would mean that about 300 scouts and front office people are wrong. I take my chances with those odds. People sad the same thing about Shaq. I remember some analyst calling for Alonzo.

Re: If Oden's a bust....
If we take Oden and he's a bust, he would be the most hyped bust in the history of the NBA. This is a guy who would have been chosen #1 after his junior year in HS.
With his size, strength, coordination, athletic ability and work ethic, he's as close to can't miss as you get.
If he's a bust, then we need to perform an exorcism and then sacrifice a chicken at halfcourt, because we would be beyond cursed.

Re: If Oden's a bust....
If Oden is a bust you can live with it because EVERYONE in the universe thinks he's a can't miss guy. If you pass on him and take Durant and Durant becomes a bust then you should just shoot yourself.

Re: If Oden's a bust....
I like Oden as well, but people thought Kwame Brown and Olowakandi were going to be great, and they are both just flat out horrible. Look at Kwame Brown's profile on nbadraft.net. They actually gave him an 11 in athletisism, and gave him nearly a 10 in every category like he was some kind of perfect son of a basketball god.
You just really never know how a player is going to turn out.

Kwame Brown and the Candyman didn't take their teams to the NCAA finals IIRC. Also, I would argue that KG has already proven to be a bust, and Kobe (without Shaq) is also a bust. How close has either one been to taking his team to the finals. I think Oden has a better chance of accomplishing that, even with all the unknowns, than Kobe or KG does (or anyone not named LaBron or Duncan).

as much as this might shock you...nbadraft.net isn't exactly the best place to rate rookies. Olowakandi was a 1 year wonder, that the Clippers moronically drafted.

Re: If Oden's a bust....
..and Brown was taken #1 because he talked trash to MJ in a workout and MJ thought he was a great competitor because of that.
Greg Oden might have an injury problem - but if he stays healthy he will, at the least, be a very good center in the association.

Re: If Oden's a bust....
Oden was better 2 years ago than Candyman is now. Kwame Brown was an incredible stretch, drafted on upside alone, with little thought to current playability.
Oden is a once every 5 years pick...

Kwame and Kandiman were both reaches that many questioned the moment the pick was made. There absolutely was no consensus that either of those guys was the #1 that year, let alone was a once every 5 to 10 year prospect, as is the case for Oden.
They both went #1 during years when there was no clear-cut, no brainer #1 blue-chipper on the board. Kwame was taken over the other two high schooler bigs, Tyson and Curry and the Euro phenom, Gasol. Kandiman was taken over smalls that looked more promising - Bibby, Carter, Pierce, but were - small. And, hell, it was the Clippers. What do you expect?
