Mike Conley Jr
First i have to say i REALLY love this guys game. Because of Oden i watched a lot of Buckeye games this year. During the year i was impressed with him and couldn't figure out why he wasn't talked about as being one of the elite guards in college ball. Now i can understand why GO says that maybe MCJ wants to play in the NBA without him and try to make a name for himself and not be in his shadow. Not sure who is a fair comparison to him that is in the league. I really like his past first mentality but yet is able to score when need be. He has above average speed and his basketball IQ is very high. He seems like a very smart kid and is an amazing athlete. Maybe Tony Parker as a comparison ? His play in the tourney was remarkable. I also think tOSU has 2 other players who can play in the league, Lewis and Cook. I really like Lewis, great spot up shooter. At 6'5" he would be a great back up to BROY.
So does MCJ fit in the Blazers plans? I hope so, but there are many questions he would have to face if we moved up and got a lotto pick to draft him. There are many advatages and disadvatages. Also there would be a lot of pressure on him to succeed for Portland. I think he would have more pressure on him if he played here or if he played for Atlanta as an example. Either way i think he is gonna be a player in this league for a long time. Maybe that is the biggest Disadvantage in itself. Let say JJ is traded and we sign Steve Blake to get a PG with experince. Then you would have Blake getting 30-35 minutes. Sergio 10-20 mins and then the way Nate plays BROY in the 4th Quarter ( As a pg ) i don't see where MCJ would get his minutes. Sergio might be our future starter but it remains to be seen if he develops enough were he plays the entire 4th quarter. I really like the idea of BROY with the ball in the final minutes because there is so many things he can do. I think the great ones always seem to have the ball in their hands when the gamme is on the line and to think this was Brandon's first year. Oh baby the future looks bright. If we could get some Steve Kerr, John Paxson types to nail the open jumper when BROY penetrates that would be ideal. Shooters, we need shooters !!!!!!.
So, as much as i like Mike Conley Jr, i just don't see him as a good fit right now (o7-08). Who knows maybe in 2 or 3 years he maybe the missing link, i dunno. I also think his price tag might be a little inflated because teams know the Oden/ Conley connection. But on the flip side, i really think he is gonna be a solid player if he goes to the right team and is given the minutes to learn how to play in the league. In this case, he might be untouchable ala Hinrich. I doubt any team is gonna trade a young point guard especially Atlanta. So it might be either go get him now or else. It seems we have so many options at pg and have bigger needs at SF that need to be addressed i don't see us drafting MCJ now. We'll see if we get an experinced pg and pass.
I feel like my 9 year old sitting in the back seat of the car asking if we are there yet and how many more minutes ?? I want June 28th/ opening night to come so bad i can't take it. I thought i would never say that about the Blazers 2 years ago.

Re: Mike Conley Jr
I don't see how wasting assets/picks to get Conley would be worth it. Sure, he might be a good player, but I'm not even close to convinced he's better than Sergio. I think Sergio is better now anyways. Sergio has an incredible basketball IQ. What more do you want from your PG? He doesn't need to score 20 ppg, we have 4 other guys to do that.
So, why do we need Conley? Sign Blake, and have him and Sergio platooning at PG. That's what I'm hoping for.

Re: Mike Conley Jr
There are two things about Conley that make me want to avoid him. 1) His shooting is poor. 2) He is short by NBA standards.
Now I don't mind the shortness too much because he is not that short, and he has the athletism and length to make up for being 2-3 inches shorter then most. But the bad shooting worries me. Also, he is quick, but I would not lable him Tony Parker quick.
I hope he does well in the NBA because I he seems like a good guy, and the Blazers would be in a good position to lure him in free agency in the future, but I honestly don't expect him to ever be more then a decent PG. He just doesn't seem to have the tools.

Re: Mike Conley Jr
I don't want him unless he falls. Maybe I'd think about taking him at 11 if most the other better prospects were all gone.
But I'd rather just keep Jack then trade Jack for the 11 and draft Conley.

Re: Mike Conley Jr
Tell me if this doesn't sound awefully familiar (nbadraft.net):
Quote:
Strengths:
An ultra-quick lefty point guard with a solid feel for running a team … His ability to get by opposing guards and into the paint is on the elite level … Very cerebral, shows excellent decision making ability, especially considering his age… A great passer with excellent vision … Understands how to feed the post well, and can hit post players with excellent dishes off the dribble drive... Thrives in the open floor, using his great speed to push the basketball.
Weaknesses:
The biggest knock against him is his age and level of experience entering the league at the point guard position. Many feel the development at the point guard position is much more difficult at the NBA level than in college. He has solid form and can hit shots from the perimeter, but must gain better consistency and add range... Will likely take a few years before he’s ready to handle a full time starting NBA gig … Still has a lot to learn about running a team and all the responsibilities of a point guard

Cough... cough... Telfair... cough.
Not saying that he's going to be a Sebastian clone, but we'd be taking a big risk on him. Thus, I'd hate to see us trade away any big chips.

Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of Conley, but it just seems like too much of a John Nash-type move to trade to get another lottery pick to get Conley and get Oden's best friend.
A Nash move in that it's made not strictly to make the team better, but for some other reason ala Telfair-adidas.

Re: Mike Conley Jr
I said all season, there's not a perimeter player on the Ohio State team I would want to draft. Conley's run in the tourney hasn't changed my mind. I don't think it's coincidental that Conley's game improved when Oden's game improved, thus drawing away defensive attention.

Re: Mike Conley Jr
If we are building around Roy, Aldridge, and Oden there are a few things we should expect in every additional player we bring in.
1) Can space the floor with his shooting.
2) Happy to be a role player.
3) Good defender.
I'm not sure if Conley fits any of those...

Re: Mike Conley Jr
Conley would be a big disappointment for any team who takes him in the top #15. It's ludicrious that he is all of a sudden being mentioned as a top 5 pick. For some reason, his friendship with Oden has made his stock shoot up...at least on internet draft boards.

I was stunned as well when I first saw he was being mentioned as a top 5 pick. Hell, even a lottery pick.
I'll be surprised if he goes in top 10.

Re: Mike Conley Jr
Lets wait until the 2nd round and get Bobby Brown. He is quicker and he can shoot better than Conely.
