Just a guess
I know that I, personally, would be unhappy if we took Brewer at #3.

I'd be unhappy as well with the selection, but would be giddy with the idea that we suddenly had a defense!
Imagine:
Oden (strong defender)
Aldridge (strong defender)
Brewer (strong defender)
Roy
Jack
This is assuming we traded Zach and pieces for the #3.
I would be very agitated if we traded Aldridge or Roy for the 3rd pick...

Re: Blazers Mock: #3
I went for the best player that fits our team which I think YI fits
brewer is too hig if we are talking 6th to 10th i would go with brewer 3 to 5th i would go YI. Yi could be a 3/4/5 depending on what we are doing smallball, break ball, clog ball...etc

I voted Yi Jianlian. It's a reach but we can do that after Oden at #1.

Yi? Who knows. We don't know how big he is (he didn't participate in the Orlando measurements) nor how old he is (19? 22? that sort of thing makes a pretty big difference in projecting a prospect). We know he's skilled and all, and he MIGHT prove to be the third-best player in this draft... the bust factor just seems to be too high. So I went with Horford.
|
You can't go wrong with Horford....I think that IF Pritchard did get up to #3 he would take Yi...He likes the high risk\high reward guys....
As for Yi...yeah I agree, there is a LOT of unknown about him.....from a fan's perspective...but make no mistake, Pritchard has seen Yi a few times...he even mentioned it here
http://www.wfan.com/topic/play_windo...audioId=747535
and I found his response when asked specifically about Yi to be interesting....and I thought the way he demurred about what he thought about YI as a prospect intersting as well...and then both Barrett and Rice have hinted about Pritchard liking Yi as well......allegedly POR was there to watch him at the California workout as well...
conclusive? lol...heck no...but interesting...
having Aldridge & Oden allows POR to take a risk IMO on a guy like Yi...

Re: Blazers Mock: #3
I voted for Brewer but I'm 50/50 between him and Horford. I didnt vote for Brewer because of fit though. It's based on reading the reports of him tearing it up in the draft workouts.

Gotta be Horford. He's the 3rd best player in this draft.

Re: Blazers Mock: #3
If Jack is part of the bait to get the #3 and we feel that Oden will continue to bring out great things in Conley, go with him. If not, take the BPA, and that would be Yi or Brandan Wright to me. That is a tossup. If we don't really have the roster space this season, give Yi the edge and try to arrange for him to come over next season. Otherwise, I might lean towards Wright, but I like both.

Re: Blazers Mock: #3
It's hard to say because I'm not sure who the BPA is at #3.
B.Wright would have been the easy choice since he's long been viewed as a very raw player with an elite nba body, the combine shows his body is nowhere near what it was believed to be, his wingspan is much shorter, his vert and agility are also lower than expected, he barely weighs 200 lbs and doesn't have the frame to really add more weight. On a player whose stock is based on skill this would be minor for a player whose stock is based on their body this is huge.
I seem to be the only one here who believes this, but I'm of the opinion that Horford is grossly overrated, he's this year's Noah in terms of hype and Shelden Williams in terms of potential. His skills and athleticism are above average but nothing special, he could be a decent starter but never be an All-Star.
I'd say trade down if they were at #3, but if we had to pick someone I'd probably take a flyer on Yi, who I don't much about.

Crap, I shouldn't vote late at night without my glasses on, I meant to vote for Al Horford and now this mock isn't valid. Ugh.

This will be a good thread to bump in a year or two and see how these players pan out and who was right.

Same. I just don't believe Brewer has star potential. I think with a #3 pick, you have to aim for a future star.
In addition, I don't think Portland must hit on this pick at all costs. Suppose they take a high risk/high reward player and he busts...that "only" leaves Portland with a young core of Oden/Aldridge/Roy/Rodriguez and some interesting young players in Jarrett Jack, Martell Webster and Travis Outlaw, all of whom could be sweetners in some future deal (or, heck, even pan out into good players for Portland).
Portland's future is incredibly rosy even if the #3 pick busts. That gives Portland the luxury of taking the highest upside player on the board, hoping he pans out into a dynasty-assuring star or superstar and saying, "C'est la vie," if he doesn't. Portland wouldn't be counting on this pick to rescue the franchise.
For my money, the highest upside prospect in this draft, outside of Oden and Durant, is Brandan Wright. A year or two ago, he was mentioned in the same breath as Oden and Durant as a super-prospect. He's not that highly regarded now, but he's still a major talent with some remarkable physical traits. I'd be thrilled if Portland took a shot on him. If he does succeed, Portland could have a juggernaut on its hands in the future. And trades are always possible to shape the team more perfectly. I would hate to reach for a lesser talent, to fill need, and pass on a possible perennial All-Star who could either be figured into the lineup somehow or dealt for greater complimentary talent than Brewer.

Re: Blazers Mock: #3
I definitely DO NOT believe in BPA unless the out of position player is significantly better.
Jordan was significantly better than Bowie, but not significantly
better than Akeem. If we would have won the coin toss, we would have
drafted Akeem (later Hakeem) and never looked back. Indeed, no one
talks about how Houston "didn't draft Jordan."
With the 3rd pick I want a starter. That does not describe Al Horford.
Unless I decided Horford was significantly better than the SF prospects,
I wouldn't pick him. I haven't watched much NCAA, but I did see Horford
get completely outplayed by Hibbert. If I decided that Brendan Wright
was much better than any of the SF prospects, I would pick him. However,
I really think the way to build a championship team is to surround
players that require a double team with shooters. We have more than one
of those players already, we need shooters, so I chose Al Thornton.
