The NBA doesn't work like that. The Lakers had Divac as the Center. Should they keep him and not go after Shaq? You reshuffle your deck. They are not equal. Show me 10 7' Center of Oden's quality and I would say you are right. You know Zach, Miles and either Pryz. or Magliore will not be in your plans either way. With this pick you opened a 15 years window. Oden will make the whole team better. Durant will have to shot the ball 30 times to be effective. Go look up the 10 loses he had. Only twice he shot over 50%. He shot 3 times over 50% from 3's in his loses going 0 for5 twice and 1 for 8 twice) In the NBA he doesn't play against 6'4" SF from Baylor or Alcorn st. This argument about he is going to be great and better than Oden is stupid. They almost lost to Baylor 3 times (won by total of 11 points in 3 games) Lost almost all out of major conference games (only beat St.Johns and LSU by 1 at home). Beat mighty Nebraska by 1 point. They won 9 games with 5 points or fewer points. Beat 3 ranked teams. Lost in the second round.

Oden on the other hand lost a total of 4 games with just as many freshmen on his team. (He didn't play in one of the loses) had six 5 points or less games. Beat at the time #1 Wisconsin (by only 1) and Michigan on the road. (by 4 points)
Beat 6 ranked teams and lost in the finals.

Re: Best fit possible with the current core?

I really liked watching Durant in college, but the problem I had with him, is you didn't know we was in the game at times unless he had the ball. I have heard that he blocks a lot of shots, but I never really saw his impact except on the offensive end. The NBA has had a lot of great scorers who can shoot the lights out, but may of them have done so on losing teams. My worry about taking a Durant is what happens if he is a taller Ray Allen? Ray Allen does a lot of good things, but never seems to lead a winning team. George Gervin was the same kind of player. I like Oden better because you have to account for him on both ends.

Let's just say that it works in my question since it doesn't work in the NBA.

Not sure if you understood where I am coming from. Based on the core, which is from last years draft I wanted to know which player people thought fit better with. I am totally in the Greg Oden camp as I think you can do more with less with this guy. Durant is going to really need the ball to effect games and like you said he isn't going to be playing against small college players, rather the best in the profession.

I'll go on record to say that I think Oden fits better with Aldridge, Roy, and Sergio.

Re: Best fit possible with the current core?

Roy is versatile enough, I doubt it matters with him. If you pick Durant, LaMarcus becomes one of the top 4 centers in the west. Pick Oden, and he becomes a valuable PF. He may not rate as high, just because there is more competition, but his overall contribution should still be very good.
