Start Raef?
Has this possibility been discussed? Once up on a time, when healthy, he was a pretty good player. Shoots the three and blocks shots (His career high is 9!) Why not give him a shot? Joel didn't do much last year.

Re: Start Raef?
I think his legs are just gone to be honest. If by some miracle he's actually healthy then I'm sure he'll be in the mix, but I'd be pretty shocked to see it happen myself.

Re: Start Raef?
IIRC, didn't Nate recently leave Raef out of his top nine rotation? I think that says it all. When in his prime, Raef was a very interesting player, but he seems well past that now. I'm not sure he's even motivated--at least compared to his team mates.

Re: Start Raef?
I thought OregonLive had an article about him at the end of last season where he said he felt great and wanted to be a big contributor to the team. I say give him a shot! Didn't he have a good game near the end of the season? I'm looking it up now. Yes, he had a game where he scored 15 pts off the bench. He also started the entire month of April. Had some decent 8 pt/6 reb games. That doesn't sound like much, but did Joel do any better? He also had some games where he blocked 2-3 shots.

Re: Start Raef?
Two years ago when he was on my fantasy team (for a while) he put up like 27 points and 7 3pts in the first half. I think he can still be a good shooting big man, but the blocks that he put up in Denver are far and gone. He'll be okay, though I think that Joel and Frye/Aldridge will be above him in the big man rotation.
But I'd like to see him get some time in preseason to show us he has some game left. You never know. Expiring contracts are very attractive.

While it's true Joel didn't do much last year, it's not like Raef did much last year either.

Re: Start Raef?
Its sad really. Raef was once a good player but his knee's are shot. If he had even decent knees he would easily be the starter over Joel. Right now he is a situational player who can efficiently draw a big man out of the paint defensivley due to his great mid range/3 point shot, but not for more than 10-15 minutes a game.

Re: Start Raef?
If he can stay healthy, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Raef start at some point this season.
But that's quite unlikely.

Re: Start Raef?
Nate has mentioned that he would like to play a more up-tempo offense this season now that Zach is gone...Raef can hardly get up and down the court as it is so I really don't see this as much of a possibility baring a major injury to Joel. Even then I think Frye or Lamarcus would get the job.

Re: Start Raef?
Not to knock Raef, but I don't see him playing much unless Joel goes down. I'd like to see more of him if he can play up tempo ball, but in reality, I only think we see him in a pinch this season. The only value he holds for this team is his paper contract, harsh, but the truth.

Re: Start Raef?
Start and/or play the best players. If LaFrentz happens to somehow be one of them, great! For him to crack the rotation, though, either guys like Frye and Przybilla will have to prove to be big disappointments or LaFrentz will have to somehow find a "way back" machine and regain something like ten or fifteen years.
