If you were Gm

What moves and picks do you make over the next 13 months.

I would draft a 4/5 who can bang and is already overseas, so
we could leave him there for a yr. Use my 3 2cnd rd picks to
get a late first and draft best available, to leave overseas
for a yr or 2. (with rudy and Oden we have enough to teach)
Boston would probably do it.

Buy-out raef and Miles

Re-sign jones if he opts out. 3yrs 15mil, basicaly the mle.

Wait 15-20 games into the season and then trade Frye and sergio/jack
for the best deal available. reason for the wait is to see what we
need and who we can afford to lose between jack and sergio.

Blake..either Jack or sergio
Roy/Rudy
Webster/Jones
LA/Travis
Oden/Priz

Thats a solid lineup with out hurting our core.

Re: If you were Gm

I confess I don't like the idea of losing Frye, but with Outlaw becoming Mr. 4th Quarter and Mr. Overtime Aldridge being the clear starter at PF, and both Oden and Przybilla at center, something's going to have to give and he seems like the odd man out.

Also, I can see you're point about waiting a bit to pull the trigger but honestly, I'd move Jack. If he's playing better than Rodriguez, so much the better for trade value, but Jack's the guy playing the back up SG minutes and Fernandez should take those. Maybe Jack will develop into a good option at PG but I wouldn't count on it at this point.

In terms of skill sets, I think Blake, Rodriguez, and even Green (in fact, perhaps Green ahead of Rodriguez) fit better around Roy and Fernandez, and frankly, I think Jack is a good enough combo guard that he'd at least somewhat rightfully be grumpy about a lack of PT. He'd probably fit better on the Heat or perhaps even a team like the Suns -- he can't light it up from deep but he's smart and plays a slightly under-sized SG really quite well, and finishes around the basket better than a lot of otherwise similar guys.

As for buying out Miles, it wouldn't happened by now if it were going to and as for buying out LaFrentz, there's absolutely no need -- he's a really valuable piece in a trade because his contract is about to come off the books. So either they trade him or the Blazers can simply wait for the contract to expire themselves.

I don't agree. You're counting on all four of those guys staying healthy. I think there will be times where we'll need Frye, and I don't think he'd really have a problem with a reduced role.

I absolutely would not buy out Raef. He is an expiring contract next season and could be very valuable. I see these assets as available in trade;

Jack
Frye
Raef
McBob
Green
Freeland
Petteri K.
Miles (but he will not be going anywhere)
First round pick
All three second rounders

I have no idea what that can get us. What I would like to see is a Paul Milsap type of PF to play limited minutes behind LA and Travis. That player can be got in the second round or in a small trade. Frye is duplication of LA and has more value to this team in a trade. Jack is a turn over machine more often than not. If he is so important than we could just pick up a better version of him with our first rounder or in trade.

I would re-sign Jones also.

Re: If you were Gm

If I were GM, and assuming Miles retired, and I could get someone to take Raef I would do this.

Trade Jack, Webster, Joel and our pick to ATL, for their pick, Zaza and Marvin Williams at the deadline.
(This does two things. It clears up a spot and moves us up a few spots in the draft. It gives ATL a solid PG, a good defensive center and someone that can shoot the lights out....3 things they need.)

On draft day I would trade Miles, Raef and our own second round pick to NY for Marbury (buy him out before he gets on the plane)
(This gives us more flexability with the roster.

On draft day I would select (assuming they come out)
Hansbrough
Jawai

Oden/Frye/Jawai
LMA/Outlaw/Hansbrough
Williams/Jones/McBob
Roy/Fernandez/Cook
Blake/Roy/Sergio/Green

That's 15 players with a few more specialist than we have now.

Re: If you were Gm

I don't understand how Frye being like Aldridge is a bad thing. Yeah, this year it isn't that great, but next year it'll be Oden/Aldridge giving way to Joel/Frye. Aldridge and Frye won't be on the court a ton together. That combined with Frye's attitude and the way the team is working makes me see no reason to get rid of him.

Sorry man, but that deal makes ZERO sense at all. First off, Atlanta doesnt own their pick this year, phoenix does. Second of all, you want to trade for Zaza, and then draft two more bigs? Thirdly, Jack and Martell for Marvin Williams? So we trade away two proven pieces that fit here for basically the same player as Outlaw?

No thanks.

I think the only thing to do is wait until the draft again. We will know where we will be picking, KP will have his targets in the draft, and teams will be either rebuilding or upgrading, looking to either dump salary for capspace and prospects, or dump prospects for now more proven players such as Jack/Martell/Outlaw/Blake/Frye/Pryz. This is where KP makes his money, you know he is salivating at the chance to rip off the entire league, one trade at a time.

As far as the 2nd rounders go, who cares? we have near the most talent in the league. Draft 3 19 year old euro's and dont look back for 3 or 4 years.

Although I do like Hansborough, and Jawai looks interesting, picking late in the draft is really just a crapshoot. Remember Gerald Green? He was such a supposed "steal" at #17 or whatever, he sucks.

Hansborough has been compared to Mark Madsen on NBADRAFT.NET, I see him as a much better scorer. He would be a great complimentary peice at #20 or so, if thats where we pick.

Because if we dont make the playoffs, we are gonna win the lotto again FOR SURE!!! At least Top 3.

I wasn't, actually, at least not for PF. I was figuring center would be fine enough with Oden, Przybilla, and Aldridge all able to play there. At PF there's McRoberts, potentially Miles, Jones is actually listed at ESPN as a PF, and I'm figuring any trade would at least bring back someone like LaFrentz. Then there's also Freeland who's best position is probably PF.

If you're right that he'd really be okay with only something like 10 minutes a game many nights (during the start of what might be the prime of his career) then it's certainly worth taking a look at making it work. He'd be getting Rodriguez-like minutes and while I love the depth of the team, the chemistry of the team, and Frye's demeanor, PT can be pretty important, and more so for a guy at Frye's stage than for someone like Freeland or McRoberts, who, as 1st/2nd year players would simply be glad to not be overseas or at the D-league.

It's also true that the Blazers practically must make a two for one or three for two trade sometime in the next few months if they're going to bring Fernandez in. They might cut Green or McRoberts but I doubt it -- it doesn't seem to be KP's style. And if they could easily be rid of Miles, it would've happened by now.

Re: If you were Gm

The reason I said buy-out Raef, was to open up a roster spot
for a draft pick..I understand the value of a 12mil expiring
contract on the trading market..the problem I see in trying
to trade him is we have to include(for example)jack and webster.
That is 16mil going out, no team is that far under the cap,
so we will have to take back at least 10-11mil in salaries.
That person would proably have 2-3 yrs left on their contract.
Would said player be happy coming in off the bench?

I figured if Paul was going to spend 12mil on raef and he
sits on the bench, might as well buy him out and use his spot
for a player we can send to the D-league and develope

I think I'd rather keep Frye than McBob or Freeland. I don't know if McRoberts has a future with the team if he keeps moping around the D-League. Hopefully he will, but time will tell.
