Re: Gasol to wear Urine-colored uni
Yea, i was thinkin' about the lottery for them, but the 2 players that would really make an impact for them would be PG and SF.
PG they already have Connelly so would they draft Rose?
SF they have Gay would they draft Beasly (though he may be too good to pass up, maybe put him at 4?)

And that seems pretty sad in exchange for a guy with 18.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.44 blocked shots.

Still doesn't make sense. They have Conley and Lowry already.

Re: Gasol to wear Urine-colored uni
They could theoretically move Gay over to the SG if they're looking for a SF (even though Cittenton is a good combo guard). So who knows?
But if they wind up with the fourth pick (that's where they're projected right now) ... at that point, it's best player available. The rest will take care of itself.
But blend a good lottery pick, a late first-rounder and a roster full of mostly inexpensive pieces, they could really shake things up by making some trades (along the lines of what Portland did in 2006).

Crittenton is a good combo guard. Think Jarrett Jack.
But Memphis GM Chris Wallace acknowledged that on a radio program today. "We're gonna lock these three guys in a room and see which two emerge, and then we'll trade somebody at some point." (h/t to TrueHoop)

Re: Gasol to wear Urine-colored uni
This reminds me of the Baron Davis trade or even the Scottie Pippen deal to us when the player is coming off a very bad year, has a big contract and gets stolen for almost nothing. The lakers are going to dominate for many years now. Kobe at 29 is the old man of that team, hopefully he ages quickly. If he is still dominant at 37... this trade might end up costing us many championships.
Kobe > Roy
Gasol > Aldridge
Odom > Travis
Bynum < Oden
So we have an advantage at 1 position, and even there Bynum has been a beast this year, maybe he plays Greg even. Bynum is freaking young too, same age as Oden. Not to mention LA has a very good young bench. This will be some rivalry in a few years.

-Second, Brown comes off the books at the end of the year, giving Memphis a lot of cap space this off-season. They will be about $20 million under the cap this off-season, which could give them a lot of options.
-Gasol didn't quite fit the rebuilding phase the Grizzlies are going through. You have Rudy Gay, Mike Conley, Kyle Lowery, Crittenton, Miller and Darko ... all good, young players who weren't quite in the same age "window" as Gasol. Memphis finally just admitted that they needed to go young. Really young.
-Picks! Don't underestimate the picks! They'll have a high lottery pick this year and L.A.'s first-round pick. Then they get another first-round pick in 2010. Picks are very, very valuable.
-Marc Gasol has become one of the better players in Spain, so he might be able to come over and make an impact for Memphis. Chris Wallace, Memphis' GM, was on a radio station today, saying that he thinks Gasol would be a first-round pick in this year's draft.
So, in essence, they traded Gasol for three first-round picks (if you count Marc as one of those, technically speaking) and the chance to sign Luol Deng or Elton Brand.

Cap space. If the soon to be new owners want to use it of course. For those who say "who will sign with Memphis?", the answer is that there looks to be too many decent free agents chasing too few teams willing and able to spend this summer. It should be a buyers market. Will Memphis get their choice of the best or second best free agent? No. They are not getting a 1st tier star with their situation. For the reasons already alluded to. Will they be able to make an offer to a solid veteran player and/or go bargain hunting? Yes.
One way of looking at what Memphis gets by trading Gasol:
Cap space during a summer it should be a buyers market.
Their own pick should improve now that they get to tank the rest of the season.
Rights to Gasol can be considered the equivalent to a 1st rounder.
Crittendon as a decent looking rookie, can be considered the equivalent to a mid 1st rounder.
2 Lakers 1st rounders.
Cap Space, Cash, Improved Lotto pick, 4 first rounders.

Crittenton will be better than Jack, think more along the lines of Steve Francis.

Re: Gasol to wear Urine-colored uni
I don't think they are done yet. They will probably package one of Lowry or Conley (Lowry most likely) with Mike Miller and trade for some cap relief. Collins and Swift have the same contract, at least Collins doesn't make a fuss against the coaches.
It's a really good trade for both sides imo. It's up to Chris Wallace to use that cap space to build a competitor. Wallace doesn't have the best track record, it'll be a good opportunity for him to turn that around as well.

Re: Gasol to wear Urine-colored uni
I'm tired of hearing everybody make it seem like capspace saved this trade. We've had capspace before and what did we get out of it? Darko and Brian Cardinal. There's no guarantee they'll even spend the money this summer and if they do, who would they bring in? The top free agents won't come here and the lower level of potential canidates (Jermaine O'Neal, Corey Maggette, Ron Artest) wouldn't make us better than we were with Gasol. The only hope is dealing Mike Miller and others for other young players and draft picks. The picks we aquired from the Lakers will be extremely low but I'd hope we could move those two for a higher pick in this years draft. I can't blame Chris Wallace for this deal but now he has a chance to build this team how he wants it, we'll see if he really is the one who ****ed up Boston.

Re: Gasol to wear Urine-colored uni
Other GMs didn't know this was coming, or they'd have outbid the Lakers. Clearly, the Lakers bribed Grizzlies GM Wallace to keep it secret.
