Uh-oh:

The Grizzlies will get the Lakers' first-round draft choices in 2008 and 2010; guard Aaron McKie, signed earlier Friday for salary cap purposes; cash considerations, and the rights to Gasol's brother Marc, a 2007 second-round pick of Los Angeles.

This seems like a deliberate attempt to circumvent salary cap requirements and I suspect will cause the trade to be vetoed as structured.

McKie is being used as a faux player and he'd be waived immediately, or as soon as allowed.

I don't think it will fly.

Why didn't we trade some of our crap for Pau Gasol? We could have had 3 spanish players. That would have been neat.

Uh...It's pretty much a done deal. If a team in the league wanted to, they could sign me to a prorated form of the league minimum and use me as trade fodder too. I'm surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more actually.

Just to clarify, this deal is not quite as one-sided as it looks. Grizzlies also got Kwame Brown and Jarvis Crittendon. Of course, Kwame is almost like a negative but Crittendon is supposed to be a decent prospect, in fact he's probably the best part of the deal for Memphis. And that seems pretty sad in exchange for a guy with 18.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.44 blocked shots.

that was disappointing, but i wasn't surprised. people like to say portland fans have more class yada yada, give me a break, we're no better than any other fanbase.

it amazes me that people would cheer for when damon stoudamire, yet booed rasheed and zach mercilessly. i guess when you pals are quick and canzana, you can look good to those bandwagon fans.

of all the so called canceruous, former jail blazers, stoudamire was by far the worst, imo. that guy was and is all into himself. he's the only former blazer i would ever boo.

Something seems very fishy about this...didn't memphis ask chicago for like deng and tyrus for gasol, yet they deal him to la for this crap? those pick are worthless, and crit is a meh prospect and don't they already have lowry and conley at pg?...who cares if brown's deal is expiring, no one wants to sign with memphis anyways.

Exactly what I was thinking. They'll have cap room but who in the hell would want to sign with Memphis? They need to follow our blueprint, and build through the draft.

IDK what memphis was thinking either. I heard something about them wanting to sell the team? maybe they are doin' what the sonics are doing or did, with Bennett wanting to get rid of the team. People think he got rid of Allen and Lewis on purpose...

Here's what Memphis was thinking:

-First, there are whispers that the team is up for sale. (I think they actually tried to sell the team last year, but anyway ...) Having Gasol's huge contract off the books makes the team more appealing.

-Second, Brown comes off the books at the end of the year, giving Memphis a lot of cap space this off-season. They will be about $20 million under the cap this off-season, which could give them a lot of options.

-Gasol didn't quite fit the rebuilding phase the Grizzlies are going through. You have Rudy Gay, Mike Conley, Kyle Lowery, Crittenton, Miller and Darko ... all good, young players who weren't quite in the same age "window" as Gasol. Memphis finally just admitted that they needed to go young. Really young.

-Picks! Don't underestimate the picks! They'll have a high lottery pick this year and L.A.'s first-round pick. Then they get another first-round pick in 2010. Picks are very, very valuable.

-Marc Gasol has become one of the better players in Spain, so he might be able to come over and make an impact for Memphis. Chris Wallace, Memphis' GM, was on a radio station today, saying that he thinks Gasol would be a first-round pick in this year's draft.

So, in essence, they traded Gasol for three first-round picks (if you count Marc as one of those, technically speaking) and the chance to sign Luol Deng or Elton Brand.
