A move like this would seriously turn me off from the NBA.

Re: Is this European Division thing for real?
Given that soccer/football associations around the world all recently gave a big **** off to the English Premier League for their attempts to add in an extra international game, I really doubt something like this happens. It really devalues the local league. Eventually I'd love to see a series for the world championship, but integrating Euro teams into the NBA regular season is just stupid.

Re: Is this European Division thing for real?
The travel involved would be brutal. People thought our road tirp a month ago was bad, on PTI today they were suggesting that a West Coast team would play 2 or 3 games on the East Coast, then fly to Europe and play all 5 of the Euro teams. And it would only be worse for those 5 lucky teams across the pond.
What they reallly need to do to expand the NBA globally is go mimic the Champions League, but fewer teams. Take the top team (maybe 2) from each of the top leagues and have these automatically make it to a group group stage ( a bye essentially) Teams that finish 2/3-4 in those top leagues would have to play an extra round against the champs of lower tier leagues.
The group stage would have maybe 4 teams each, with 2 advancing to a knockout stage and have the rest follow like our playoff system with shorter series (3 out of 5 tops).
Of course some tweaking would have to be done, but I think this type of format would work best for global expansion of the game. Plus, it allows the domestic leagues to remain intact and not lose their top 5 teams to NBA European Division

Re: Is this European Division thing for real?
NBA = National Basketball Association. We already have to have a team in Canada, and i'm sure lots of players don't wanna live outside the US but they are forced to if they play for the raptors, but it would be rediculous to expect them to live Oversees, imo. And road trips would be horrible, i just don't like it.
National = America, not Global Basketball Assiciation, geez. They have soccer, imo.

Re: Is this European Division thing for real?
I'm with nightfly, this would kill my interest in the NBA. How about they fix the NBA's problems before they expand into another country.
I like how they are equating MLB and NFL teams playing single games (or series as the case is with MLB) in Europe as being the same as a team playing over here and there. Not only will the travel be insane, but they'll have to make the season longer to make up for the down time needed. And they'd have to have a lot of US teams going over there at one time.
Just a stupid idea of include them in the NBA. Give them their own league that is NBA sponsored.

Tip offs at 8 in the morning.......I can hear the Far East Bias now, I can't stay up till 4 am to watch my team play the Blazers in Portland. Plus, Eric would have to give up "Bones" and start making feature films to afford following the team during down times......I don't see how it could work for the current teams.
HOWIE says "NO".

With FIVE teams joining the league, every team will probably have to give up 3 or 4 players to be available in the expansion draft. This is crazy! Road trips will be insane. And talk about uprooting your family. You can get traded from Sacramento to Madrid! What does everyone think about this? 35 teams in the league? This will also decrease the amount of games you play against conference opponents cuz it will still only be an 82 game season. WHat do you all think about this?
|
yeah just think, I broke this story like last year!!!!!!!!!
I think 2 of the teams will be big euro teams like Tau Ceremica, Panathinikos..etc.
The Euro teams will play mainly the east teams and mini road trips in the west same with the west teams, mini road trip to get it all done at once.
The Nba and Euro league have been buddy buddy for about 5 years now, infact they are pushing for a unified set of rules like in FIFA, stern and the ceo of euroleague dont want to be like the NFL they want to be like SOCCER aka FIFA. A partnership between the NBA and EURO league is smarter than them fighting each other.
I think its a wise move by Stern before he leaves, the was the US is going with the $$, the Euroleague could pass the NBA as the best league due to the EURO being so strong and the league is getting bigger in popularity.

Re: Is this European Division thing for real?
fuel is already at a premium, yet we want to try and fly back and forth to europe? Nope. Like alex said, the talent is already diluted enough, please don't add 5 more teams. I know as a player, I wouldn't want to play in a foreign country if I was an NBA caliber payer, and no more back to backs pretty much. The schedule will take forever to finish.

Re: Is this European Division thing for real?
This would be fought tooth and nail by the Spanish, Italian and French leagues (re-iterating the point made on PTI). Most Europeans already loathe American institutions' intrusion into their culture(s) and I can't realistically see fans of Basketball in these coutries going for it, especially if they were called upon to foot the bill for new arenas. It's all well and good to suggest expansion and the thought of going into untapped markets, but this is a non-starter.
And can anyone honestly see (mostly) African-American kids (and almost any American kids for that matter) eager to play and live in these countries?

And I would bet the players union doesn't have much legal ground to stand on in Europe.
