Nice strawman, but let's not forget you were the one who brought up max contracts.
Why bring in Smith? I still haven't figured that one out yet. He shoots 44%. LMA is a career 49% shooter and is a better FT shooter. Plus he is much cheaper over the next two years.
I am really puzzled by your post. Please explain it further. I'm not against it, but I don't understand your rationale...at all.

Re: Josh Smith
the league is loaded with overpaid decent players , maxing either of LMA or JS would be a bad idea.

My rationale concerning acquiring Josh Smith is that he would make us much better. so we could win more games. I am also open to acquiring other players, Deng might be available, or Michael Redd. I'd rather have Josh Smith. Deng would be fine too. I just think there is a better chance that Deng stays in chicago.

I guess what i meant was that he is going to want Max dollars to stay WITH ATLANTA this offseason as a restricted free agent..
If he doesnt want to stay in atlanta, and forces a sign and trade(which i can see happening), i would be more than happy if KP took him off their hands. and in that case, it could quite possibly be for less than max. which would be fine by me.
i really only think the top 5 or ten players should get/deserve max(lebron/kobe/chris paul(who will undoubtedly be maxed out this offseason by the hornets)/steve nash(who doesnt make max)/garnett/ and maybe a few more.
Orlando threw all that money at Rashard, when he isnt even a top 20/30 player, or a star even. Some players sell tickets, Rashard is not one of them. I would pay to see Josh Smith play.
Trust me, I hope LMA is worth Max someday, that will mean he is a great player.

Re: Josh Smith
I'd love to acquire Smith for some collection of players that didn't include Oden, Aldridge or Roy. Smith reminds me (not in any conclusive way, since I haven't seen tons of him) of a young Shawn Marion. Ridiculous hops, excellent rebounder (though, not a freakish one like Matrix), tough defender, good scorer and willing and able to pass. If he can fit in at small forward, Oden, Aldridge and Smith would form a fairly amazing front line. Plus, he fits the Portland's window reasonably well.
Since Aldridge and Smith are both young, with plenty of prime years ahead, I'd be willing to max them both out when necessary. It might be a bit of overpayment, but young talent at the start of a title-contention window is worth overpaying for certainty and continuity.

Re: Josh Smith
Raef (expiring) + Webster + 1st Round Pick (2009) + choice of Frye/Sergio --> Josh Smith
in the off-season, Sign and Trade or wateva.
For Atlanta; Raef's contract with 1 more season is very valuable after their stingy owners just took on Bibby's contract (and do Raef/Bibby expire together or 1 year apart?), Webster means they can let one of Marvin/Childress go, the 1st rounder is just a valuable asset to have, and Frye/Sergio adds depth.
For Portland; Josh Smith will fill a lot of flaws in your team - weak perimeter defence, lack of help defence (havn't seen enough of the Blazers to know how true this is), a guy that isn't afraid to take shots or draw fouls, fastbreak partner for Roy (options of Smith/Aldridge on either side), "mentor" for Outlaw (they can both train together), he's also an underrated passer. And ofcourse it adds much needed TALENT to this blazers squad (and without giving up youth!) - like Minstrel said, young talent at the start of a title-contention window is worth overpaying for certainty and continuity.
Only problem is I think Atlanta might be fully committed to J-Smoove (they might hold on to him at all costs - regardless of if it means losing both Marvin/Childress in free agency).

Re: Josh Smith
He's a good player, but I hate his nickname. Have you ever said that out loud? Sounds like a speech impediment. As much as I have hope for Webster, Frye, and Sergio, I would do that deal in a heartbeat.

Re: Josh Smith
Even a big webster supporter like me would be in favor of a trade like that. But to think that Smith would as for max from atlanta, then be refused, then be interested in a less than max contract from portland is a little bit of a stretch. Atlanta is smith's home town, that team is young and talented, and I remember hearing this offseason that Smith was willing to accept less from them to stay a Hawk...
But if there would be any way to get him here short of giving up Roy, Oden, or LMA I'd do it.

Yeah i guess we will see how it plays out. i just really doubt we are going to just let raef expire, and use cap room. it will be nice to pick up blake and outlaws options in 09.

Re: Josh Smith
As a lesser deal, Childress would be a fairly nice addition. He's versatile, productive and still young (turns 25 in June). He would be a nice small forward who might not be very expensive in a trade. His PER has risen every year of his career, and this year it's 18.3 (20.0 and above is generally considered star-level).
But Josh Smith would be an amazing addition. He's 2 years younger, also has improving PERs and is at 19.7 this season.

Re: Josh Smith
I'd be game to get him, but not with our 1st.
If we can keep them from our first, then we still have possiblity of grabbin' a Pg like Rose or Bayless. Or if we can't trade up a really good combo guard with great defense in Webstbrook.
